Description

angles,
GEORGE M. LINDSEY, OF TONAWANDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT me stilafins g erron- TO 'WILLIAM ASGOUGH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN vDOOR-SLECURERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.l l 7S,S64, dated June 20, 1876; application tiled November 24, 1875. l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. LrNDsEY, of Tonawanda, in the county ol' Erie and State of New York, have invented an Improved Door-Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanyin g drawings, forms a full and exact specification.
This invention relates to door securers or fasteners; and it consists ot' a portable springbow, having pivoted within its jaw a reversible spindle, provided on onev of its extremities with a very coarse and tapering screw-thread, engaging with a two-part nut or bushing secured to the door and the jamb, and on its other extremity with a piston for a watch-key, said reversible spindle being so arranged that either the screw or the watch-key will project from the spring-bow, and the two-part nut so secured to the door and jamb that when the said screw is introduced into said two-part bushing, the door will be effectually secured and prevented from being opened, in a man-l ner as hereinafter more fully described'.
Figure l in the drawings is a fragment of a door and jamb, showing my device in proper position. Fig. 2 isa front elevation of the door-fastener, showing its two-part nut and the door and jamb in section. Fig. 3 is an end view of the spring-bow, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of one part of the nut.
Like letters of reference indicate similar parts iu the various tigures.
A and B are fragments of a door audits jamb, respectively. G C' is a two-part nut, consisting ot' plates bent at right angles, and provided with holes a for the passage of screws, to fasten them to the lsaid door and jamb. In doors where the jamb projects over the face, I make one of these plates only as described and the other plain. D is a springbow, produced of'- a lat or quarter-round bar .of 4iron or steel, and bent in such manner that its two extremities are parallel to form a jaw, D'. This jaw is provided with gutters ori grooves d", intersecting each other at right and they servethe purpose hereinafter to be referred to. E is a spindle, pivoted within the jaw D' by the pin d', and it consists of a cylindrical center part, having two 'circular projections -or trunnions, d, corresponding to the grooves d" in the jaw D', by
means of which it is retained in proper position, a very tapering and coarse screw ou one and a piston for a watch-key ou its other extremity. This spindle E rotates upon its pivot d' between the jaw D', in suchmanner that either the screw-spindle F or the watchkey G may project from the bow D. Each of the plates G C' is provided with curved notches or indents, corresponding to the screw F, so as to form a nut therefor when .placed opposite each other upon the door Ayand the frame B.
The operation of my door-fastener will be readily understood. The two-part nut being permanently attached to the door and jamb, the screw-spindle 'F is introducedtherein, and has, on account of its taper, a tendency to force the door and frame apart, and, in conjunction with its threads engaging with said two-part nut, to tightly and securely fasten the same, so that itv cannot be opened from without unless the spindle is first withdrawn.
Although the two-part nut is a very desirable adjunct to my door-fastener, to prevent the marring of the door, it is not absolutely necessary for its properoperation, since the same result Inay be obtained by introducing the screw-spindle directly between the door and jamb, where said screw-thread will bury itself into the wood, and thus securely lock said door.
The device, as described, forms a very convenient and portable door-fastener for travelers' use, to secure a room against intruders, aside from those facilities generally afforded .for such purposes, and it is, on account of its cheapness, within the reach of all.
Having thus fully described my invention, IV
desire to secure by Letters Patent of the Unitedtates- 1. The combination, with the spring-bow D, having its jaw D' provided with-the gutters d", intersecting each other at right angles, of
"the spindle E, pivoted within the jaw D', and
having the trunnions d centrally, and a very coarse and tapering screw-thread on its ex- `tremity, `und thrx twopart nut'C G",secured,to
the door A and jaunb B,substantially" as described, for the use and purpose set'forth.
2. The Within-deseribed combined portable door-fastener and Watch-key, consisting of the spring-bow D, having its jaw D' provided "withthegutters d",` and therrewersible spindle E, pivoted within the jaw D', and having` the truunions d centrally, and a very coarse and tapering screw-thread on one, and a Watchkey,`G, on its other` extremity, substantially as described, as anew arteleuoi manufacture. In testimonywhereofl` have hereto set: myy
hand and afxed my seal 1iu the presence of t two subscribing witnesses. l
GEORGE M. LINDSEY.` [L sq Witnesses:
