"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD A. ABBOTT AND MYRON PARRISH, OF J AUKSON MICHIGAN.
. IMPROYFMENT IN KEYS FOR LOCKS.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l88,722, dated March 27, 1877 application filed January 12, 1877.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that we, RIGHARD A. ABBOTT and MYRON W. PARRIsH, of Jackson, State of Michigan, have invented a Key for Door and other Locks, of which the following is a Upon this shank is fitted a thumb bindingnut, which maybe screwed tightly against the face of the-lock or the door or'other ma terial on which such lock is fixed, rendering the key fast and immovable, in any desired position in the lock, the'result being obtained by the combination of the nut or thumb-screw with the key and look, as herein described, and
shown in the accompanying drawing.
That the construction and operation of our invention may be fully understood, We de- We make the shank A of the key D, used in door and other locks,
which may be operated from .eit'her'side, of
' uniform size, and out upon such shankathread or screw. Upon this shank we fit a thumbscrew or tightening-nut, B, which may be easily turned-by thethuinb and fingers.
To use our invention, the key D is inserted in the lock and turned to any desired position. The nut B is then screwed up tightly against the lock or door, and the result is that the key becomes fast and immovable in the lock at the point desired, so that it can neither be turned by burglars nippers, nor can a key or pick be inserted from the opposite side in such a way that the bolt to the lock can be moved or drawn. Ordinary door-keys cafi'be fitted with our invention by filing or turning the shank, and fitting it with thread and nut in the manner above stated. The nut B may be used in connection with a washer, G, if desirable in any case, and may be made in any form or shape.
We claim as our invention- The combination of a thumb-screw or nut with a door or other key, when constructed and operated substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
RICHARD A. ABBOTT. MYRON W. PARRISH.
