KNOB ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,305, dated November 27, 1883. Application filed June 30,1883. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. L. PHIPPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Knobs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a detail showing one end of the spindle in perspective. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the sleeves. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the keys. Fig. 5 shows a view of the back of the knob.
This invention has relation to door-knobs; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, a designates the spindle, which is rectangular in crosssection, and is provided in one of its faces, at each end, with an inwardly-inclined cut away portion, 1), extending from the ends of the spindle or shank to a vertical shoulder, c, as shown.

The sleeves h and z both have rectangular openings extending longitudinally therethrough to their outer ends, which latter are provided with threaded openings k k, for the reception of the screws 2 Z, which secure the knobs m m to the flanged extensions a a of the sleeves h and i. The sleeves h and z are provided with shoulders 0, against which the knobs abut when in place, and longitudinal flanges p are provided on the extensions n n,
to prevent the turning of the knobs on the extensions. Openings (1 q are provided in the extensions n n at corresponding sides of the longitudinal angular openings, and curved flanged keys 1" 1" are employed to lock the sleeves upon the shank. The sleeve h is first slipped upon the shank a at one end, its opening (1 being opposite or over the incline or cutaway portion b, and the curved flanged key 9' is inserted into the recess between the shank and the wall of the sleeve, and it so bears therein that unless the head of the key be depressed, thereby causing the key to straighten. a pull upon the sleeve will only cause it to bind more tightly. The knob is then slipped upon the extension at and its securing-screw driven to place. The shank is then inserted into the opening in the door, and the sleeve iis attached in the same manner as the sleeve h. To remove either sleeve, the knob must be removed, so that the key can be pried out.
This construction is simple and secure. no outward evidence of its construction being discernible. It may be fitted to doors of different thicknesses with great facility, as the sleeves may be locked on different points of the inclines.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the shank at, having the incline b and shoulder c, of the sleeve h, having the flanged slotted extension n, perforated in its end for the knob-securing screw, and the curved flanged key 1", for securing the sleeve upon the shank, substantially as specified.
