BARRETTE Filed April 24, 1929 INVENTOR AER/4 HAM 6000/ 1 14505 GOOD/VAN ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 9, 1930 UNITED STATES ABRAHAM GOODMAN AND JACOB GOODMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK,
BARRETTE Application filed April 24,
This invention relates to improvements in hair fasteners of the barrette type.
The objects of the invention are to provide a hair fastener having a hinged tongue which is adapted to firmly grip the hairto hold it in place; to provide a hinge of novel and simple construction; and to provide a catch for the free end of the tongue, which catch covers said end when in closed position and holds it against accidental unlocking movement.
With these, and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying l5 drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the barrette. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through the hinge on line 33 of Fig- 1.

curved in the direction of length, which bar may be made of pyroxolin, metal, or any other suitable material. The bar is preferably conveXo-concave in section to provide the re- 39 quired strength and stiffness with a minimum quantity of material, and to provide an ornamental curved front surface, although bars of other shape may be used if desired. V A metal tongue 2 is hinged tothe back of the bar 1 at one end thereof. The tongue is also similarly curved in the direction of length, and is convexo-concave in section to render it rigid. One end of the tongue is bent or coiled'inwar'dly to form a cylindrical pivot 3 aboutwhich the tongue turns freely and smoothly.
The tongue is secured to the bar by means I of a'hinge4 which loosely embraces the pivot 3 and passes through a slot 5 in the tongue adj acent to the pivot. The slot 5 is somewhat wider than the width of the hinge 4 to permit of slight lateral angular movement of the tongue with respect to the hinge. The hinge may be made of the same kind of material as the bar, and it is cemented or other- The devicecomprises a barrette bar 1 1929. Serial No. 357,636.
wise'suita-bly secured thereto in fixed posi tion.
surface of the opposite end of the bar to 'engage and hold the narrowed free end 7 of the tongue in its closed position. The catch may be made of a single piece of metal bent in hook shape and preferably having two upturned side flanges 8 between which the end 7 of the tongue is received and held against accidental disengagement.
In applying the barrette to the hair, the hair is engaged in between the tongue 2 and the bar 1, and the free end of the tongue is then locked in the catch to retain the device in place in the hair, the loose play of the tongue in its hinge permitting of the necessary lateral movement of the tongue required to lock it in place.
Modifications in the details of construe tion and arrangement of parts herein illustrated and described may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
What we claim is 1 1. A barrett-e comprising a bar curved in the direction of length, a rigid tongue of conveXo-concave section curved lengthwise and having one end coiled inwardly to form a pivot about which it turns, a slot in the tongue adjacent the pivot, a hinge secured to one end of the bar loosely embracing the pivot and passing through the slot in the tongue, the-slot being slightly wider than the width of the hinge to permit lateral playof the tongue with respect to the hinge, and a catch at the opposite end of the bar to hold the free end of the tongue in closed position. i
2. A barrette comprising a bar of conveXo-concave section curved in the direction of length,a rigid tongue also of conveXoconcave section curved in the direction of length and having one end bent to form a pivot about which, it turns, a slot in the tongue adjacent the pivot, a hinge secured to one end of the bar loosely embracing the pivot and passing through the slot in the tongue, the slot being slightly wider than thewidth of the hinge to permit lateral A catch or guard 6 is fastened to the inner 5 locked when in 'closed position.
o fthe tengue w ith respect t e the hinge, an v a catch at the 0p site end of the bar having upturned side anges between which the free end of the tongue is engaged and I ABRAHAMEZ- GOODMAN; I
