(c1. 132-41) My invention relates to a new and improved curler which can be manufactured and assembled at low cost and which can be used in a simple and convenient manner.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a curler which has a curling rod, a clamping bar pivoted to said curling rod, and a retaining member which can be detachably connected to the outer end of the curling rod.

Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, it being understood that the above statement of the objects of my invention is intended generally to explain the same and without limiting it in any manner.

The hollow curling rod I is made of any suitable material. This material is preferably a plastic material, such as cellulose acetate or the like, which can be readily molded into the desired shape. The outer end of the curling rod I is closed, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. This curling rod may be provided with two series of perforations 2. The curling rod I is of substantially cylindrical shape and it is provided with a thickened or reinforced rear extension Ia. Said extension Ia is of general half-round shape, in lateral cross-section. A clamping rod 3, which can be made of any suitable metal, is pivotally connected to the curling rod I. A blade spring 4, which is made of any suitable metal, has its legs located between the rear end-portion of the pivoted rod 3 and the extension Ia, so that the clamping rod 3 is normally held in the clamping position which is shown in Fig. 3.

A supplemental resilient clamping member C, which is made of any suitable metal, is provided with legs 5 and 6 which are bent so as to provide a pair of front loops 'l and la. The front loops 'I and 'la are integral with the legs 5 and 6, and said front loops are formed by helically bending the legs 5 and 6 at the front end of the supplemental clamping member C.

'I'he inner ends of the legs 5 and 6 are bent to form pivot portions 5a and 6a, which pass through laterally opposed boresin the reinforced rear end-portion Ia of thecurling rod I. Said pivot portions have parts which are located in extension Ia and which are forwardly bent. The inner end of the pivoted clamping rod 3 is provided with integral perforated lugs L, through whose perforations said pivot portions 5a and 6a are also passed, in order to provide a pivotal connection for the clamping rod 3. 'I'he outer wall of theextension la is non-circular orpolygonal, and' its vinner wall is substantially semi-cylindrical. The pivot portions a-and 6a are located in front of the legs 4 of the spring, as shown in Fig. 5. As shown in Fig. 4, the outer periphery of extension lo!l has opposed planar faces, which are abutted by respective planar faces of the inner walls of lugs L.

The closed tip of the curling rod I is provided with a groove with which the loops 'I and 'Ia can be releasably interlocked by longitudinally extending the arched and resilient legs 5 and 6, so that the resilience of said legs maintains said loops I and 'la detachably engaged with this groove.

The device is used in the well-known manner, by clamping the end of a strand of hair between the curling rod I and the clamping bar 3, while the front end of the clamping member C is disengaged from the curling rod I. 'I'he device is then turned in order to wind the lock of hair helically or spirally around the members I and 3, and the loops 'I and 'Ia are then engaged with the groove at the closed tip of the member I.

The clamping member C which is shown in Fig. 6, has shoulders I0 which abut each other,

and which are integral with a loop lb, which is normally closed. The member C' is made of resilient wire. The shoulders I0 releasably lock with the transverse groove at the tip of the curling rod.

It is unnecessary to connect the extension I a to the respective leg of spring 4, because the metal rod 3 is connected by a rivet or the like to the respective leg of spring 4.

It is obvious that the device can be manufactured and assembled at low cost. In the preferred embodiment, the front tip of the curling rod I is imperforate. However, the invention is not restricted to this. For the purposes of the claims, a curling rod which has a closed tip'is dened as a curling rod whose outer end has a lateral end-portion which provides a groove which can be releasably engaged by the outer end of the clamping member C.

I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and through transverse bores of the lugs of the` legs having integral loop-shaped means which are adapted to detachably engage said groove, said legs being pivotally connected to said curling rod by lateral pivot extensions of said legs which pass through bores of said curling rod and also through the perforations of lugs of said clamping rod into said curling rod so that said pivot extensions turnably connect said clamping rod to said curling rod, the portions of said pivot extensions which are located in said curling rod being unconnected from each other and being forwardly inclined.

A curling device comprising a curling rod whose front tip is closed, said tip having a transclamping rod in order to pivotally .connect the clamping rod and said clamping member to said curling rod, said pivot portions having parts which are located in said curling rod and which are forwardly bent and which are unconnected to each other, a blade spring .connected only to said Clamping rod and having a spring-lee which abuis the adjacent portion of said curling rod, saidblade spring being adapted to hold. .the piveted Clamping rod in clamping position, the innerends .of said pivot portions being located in iront of said blade spring.
