COMBINED BARRETTE, COMB, AND HAIR WAVEii Filed Aug. 20, 1928 2g s Q 2 Fig.5.
. EengeAPurter F t 5.4. FILE-5- INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 24, 1929 PATENT OFFICE GEORGE A. PORTER, OF LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS COMBINED BARRE'ITE, COMB, AND HAIR WAVER Application filed August 20, 1928.
My invention relates to toilet articles and refers more particularly to a device for holding the hair, waving the hair, combing the hair and one that may be utilized as a hair ornament.
One object of my invention is to provide a simple device utilized as a barrette adapted to firmly hold the hair in place.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device adapted to be utilized for curling the hair.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device adapted to be utilized as a comb.
One of the most valuable features of my invention consists in a device that may be utilized as a barrette, a comb and a hair waver.
I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar parts are referred to by like numerals throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of the device assembled.
Figure 2, is a developed view of the body of the device.
Figure 3, is a section taken on lines 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4, is a section taken on lines 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5, is a section taken on line 55 of Figure 1.
This combination barrette, comb and hair waver 1, shown in Figure 1 is comprised 01 a segmentally shaped body U shaped in cross section with a rounded bottom as indicated in Figures 3 to 5 inclusive, the upturned portions 3 and 4 provided with comb teeth 5 that are intermediate the ends 6 and 7. Said upturned parts are a uniform distance from the bottom of the U except atthe ends where the part is sloped down to meet the ends, as shown in Figure 1. The end 6 is provided with ears 8 and 9 having holes 10 and 11 4 through which the pivot pin 12 for the bar 13 may be fixed.
The other end 7 of this body is formed to provide a hook 14 within which the end of the bar 13 may be held said hook preferably formed by bending up the end of the base part Serial No. 300,872.
as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the bar 13 being curved intermediate between said pivot and hook to provide means for holding hair that passes through the teeth of the comb on each side ofthe U shaped piece between the bar 13 and the bottom 15 of the device. The dotted line in Figure 1, indicated by 16, illustrates the position of this bar when the device is to be used as a comb.
Figure 2 illustrates the developed shape of co the body part of the device which is bent U shaped on lines 17 and 18 and the hook end bent upwardly at 19, as shown in Figure 1.
lVhen the bar 13 is placed as shown by the dotted lines 16 in Figure 1, the device could be utilized as a comb. When the device is used as a barrette and the bar forced under the hook 14 the hair will be forced between the comb teeth 3 and 4, and this bar 13, when forced into locking position with the N hook 14, will clamp the comb or barrette firmly to the hair. As the bottom of the comb teeth are somewhat above the bottom 2 of the device, the hair thus held in this position will be given a permanent wave. 7
The curved surface 2, may be utilized for holding ornamental devices, precious or semiprecious stones or like articles, not shown in the drawings, in any suitable manner.
Having thus described and illustrated the so preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construc tion or arrangement of parts shown, since it is evident that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claim.
I claim In a combined barrette, comb and hair waver, a one-piece U-shaped segmental element formed to provide inwardly projecting parallel comb teeth and having means pivotally holding a curved bar engageable in a hooking means, said hooking and pivoting means being on the opposite ends of said element.
Signed at Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, this 13th day of August, 1928.
GEORGE A. PORTER.
