Description

Oct. 17, 1950 w. c. GRANT FINGER SUPPORTED HAIR Lopx SEPARATING DEVICE Filed May. 6, 1948 Patented Oct. 17, i950 FINGERSUPPORTEI) HAIR LocK SEPARATING DEVICE Winifred C. Grant, Shelby, Mich.

Application May 6, 1948, Serial No. 25,397

1 Claim.

This invention relates to hair combs.

An object of this invention is to provide a small finger supported device for use in curling or waving of hair which is so constructed that it can be mounted on a digit so that the user will be able to quickly separate the desired lock of hair to position such lock for combing without changing the position of the device with respect to the hand.

Another object of this invention is to provide such a structure having a projecting lock separating point or prong and a split loop for engagement about a digit, the device being preferably formed of plastic or composition material so the loop may be adjusted as to size by heat, such as hot water, in order that the loop will snugly fit onto the digit and will not turn thereupon.

To the foregoing objects, and others which may hereinafter more fully appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fallwithin the scope of the invention as claimed.

In the drawing:

Figure l is a plan view of a device constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.

Figure 2 is a detailed side elevation, partly broken away, of the device.

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 2.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates generally the back of a structure 1 which includes a longitudinal rib ll having a plurality of spaced teeth l2 extending right angularly therefrom. The back or rib ll includes a relatively narrow web l3 which projects forwardly a slight distance beyond the rib or back member H. The back member II also includes an upwardly and forwardly curved rib I4 which with an upper rib l5 forms a lock separating point, generally designated as l6, and of substantially V-shape. The forward edge of the rib I6 is disposed 'on a concave curve which merges with the forward tooth I! of the comb. The back member II also includes a rear rib l'8 extending upwardly from the rear tooth l9 and a digit encircling split ring 20 extends from the web l3.

The split ring 20 is adapted to receive a digit and the forward edge of the ring 20' is disposed on a concave curvature 2! which merges with the rear portion of the upper rib I5. The rear portion of the upper rib l5 forms with the bottom of the ring 20 a seat or rest against which the digit is adapted to engage when the device is in applied position.

The combined lock separating point and holder hereinbefore described is adapted to be made out of plastic or other composition material so that the holder or ring 20 may be readily made to conform to the size of the digit on which the device is being applied.

In the use of this device the digit D is extended through the holder or ring 20 as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 with the forward end of the digit spaced rearwardly a substantial distance from the point It so that this point may be extended into a selected lock of hair for separating the lock from the mass of hair. When the lock has been separated from the mass of hair, this lock may be combed out by the comb embodying the back H and the teeth l2. In order to provide for the conforming of the holder or ring 20 to the finger, the ring is heated as by placing the device in hot water or the like to soften the split portions of the holder. The finger or digit may then be extended into the ring of holder and the ring may be either expanded or contracted to the desired size so that the device will be snugly disposed on the forward end of a digit.

With a device as hereinbefore described, the user will be able to quickly separate a lock of hair for the forming of curls or waves thereby saving a substantial amount of time which is now consumed in taking a comb from a pocket, separating the lock, reversing the comb and then returning the comb to the pocket. This construction being of relatively short length can be easily mounted on a finger or digit so that a lock of hair may be easily and quickly separated and subsequently combed. When the lock of hair has been combed, this device may be retained on the finger and by reason of its small size will not greatly interfere with the normal use of the hand in the formation of a curl or wave.

I claim:

A finger supported device comprising a vertically disposed elongated web, a rib extending along the lower edge of said web, an upwardly and forwardly concavely curved rib formed on the forward end of said web and having the lower portion thereof merging into a tooth carried by said first mentioned rib, an upper rib formed on said web, said upper rib merging into a split resilient ring whose aperture extends axially along the length of said rib, said ring being 3 formed on the rear portion of the device, said upper rib being longitudinally concavely arcuate to provide a finger rest for a finger engaged in said split ring, the forward portion of said upper rib being formed with a longitudinally reversed convex curvature and merging with said first mentioned curved rib to provide a fiat, tapered lock separating point.
