IMPROVEMENT IN BELLOWS FOR CONCERTINAS, REED-ORGANS, &c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [77,890, dated May 23, 1876; application filed April 27, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS T. SIMON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bellows for Musical Wind-Instruments, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of an angular bellows containing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof. Fig. 3 shows my binding-strip in blank form. Fig. 4 is a side view thereof when finished. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the same.

Myimprovementis especially adapted to angular bellows for accordions, concertinas, and likemusicalwind-instruments,bntis applicable, also, to bellows for general use. It consistsin combining, with an angular bellows, and particularly with its corners, a binding-strip of sheet metal, which is bent at right angles, or nearly so, and provided with lips on its oppositelongitinlinal edges,and provided, also, with spurs on its opposite ends, so that this strip is adapted to be applied to the corner of a fold in a bellows, when the aforesaid lips overlap the edges of the fold, and the spurs serve to retain the whole firmly in place, the latter being passed through the top or bight of the fold, and being clinched.

In the drawing, the letter A designates an angular bellows of the character generally used in accordions, and which is provided with my improved metal binding. For this binding I make use of a strip, B, of sheet metal of the form shown in Fig. 3, such strip being cut out or stamped on its opposite 1ongitudinal edges, and at or near the middle of its length, in such a manner as to form triangular recesses a a, (hereinafter referred to,) and being made with projections or spurs b b at its opposite ends. After the strip B has been out or stamped out to the proper shape,

I bend or turn up its opposite longitudinal edges along the dotted lines d d, so as to form lips 0 c thereon, and at the same time bend it flatwise at right angles, or nearly so, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the triangular recesses a a, be-

fore mentioned, permitting of this bending- -any suitable instrument.

It is obvious that by the spurs I) b my binding-strip is very firmly held in place, while by the application of the strip great strength is given to the bellows.

It is apparent that my invention is applicable to angular bellows for musicalinstruments of any description, as well as to any other bellows with exposed corners or angles, and, if desired, the binding-strips may be carried all around the folds of the bellows, their ends being united. In this case the spurs b b can be dispensed with.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is e The combination, with an angular bellows, of a binding or corner strip, A, of the character herein described, consisting of a strip of sheet metal which is bent at right angles, or nearly so, and provided with lips c c, to overlap the edges of the bellows-folds, substantially as specified.
