Description
E. L. MARSHALL. Package for Fruit, &0.
Patenied June 4, 1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN L. MARSHALL, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKAGES FOR FRUIT, 80c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,441, dated June 4, 1878; application filed April 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. 1VIARSHALL, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Packages for ,Fruit, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the fruit-package spread out. Fig. 2 is a side view of the package folded up into shape. Fig. 3 is a corner view of the package.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
This invention relates to a package for fruit and other articles requiring to be done up in small quantities. Said package consists of an oblong piece of thin board or paper, so folded as to form a three-sided pyramidal-shaped package or box, provided with a tuck or tag, whereby the sides of the box are held together.
A further and more full description of the invention will be found as follows: Fig. 1 of the drawing represents a piece of material of which the package or box is made. The material, as above said, may consist of a thin oblong piece of board or paper of sufficient strength and firmness for the purpose. Diagonally across the piece are made incisions, partially through it, so that the piece may easily bend and form sharp corners in direction of the lines 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 of Fig. 1, thereby laying out the piece into five triangular sections, A, B, O, D, and E. At one end of the piece is formed a tag, F. Near the opposite end is an aperture or slit, G, to receive the tag, as hereinafter shown. 7
The manner of folding the above-described piece of material to form a box or package is as follows: Section A of the piece is turned up at an angle along the line 1, so that the point a thereof will come to the point b of section D, which it will on further bending the piece along the line 2. When the piece is thus bent, the three sections A, B, and G will form three sides of a triangular pyramidal box without a bottom. The bottom, however, is supplied by bending the piece along the line 3 until section D meets the base of the three sides alluded to. Said section D forms the bottom to the sides, as shown in Figs. and 2.
The sides and bottom thus brought together, forming a triangular box, are fastened together by the tag F. To this end, section E is bent along the line 4, lapping it over onto section A. The tag F is then inserted in the slit G, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby binding the sides and bottom securely together, making a neat and din'able package for fruits, &c.
The piece may be folded at different angles than those hereinbefore described for forminga package. The oblong piece or blank may be scored at different angles, and folded so as to form other than a right pyramidal-shaped package, which may be of various sizes, and, as before said, may be of any suitable material, and used for holding other articles than fruits. By inverting the position of the package and placing the end in a suitable opening, so that the sides. may be held together, the bottom D and section E may be turned back, thereby exposing the contents of the box to purchasers.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box-blank of an oblong piece of material, with a tag at one end, and a slit or loop to receive the tag, and being cut or scored in lines which are at oblique angles with the parallel sides thereof and with each other, forming a zigzag line lengthwise of the blank, for the purpose set forth.
2. A box formed of a single piece of material, and having triangular sides A B G, triangular bottom D, triangular section E, overlapped on side A, tag F, attached to section E, and slot G in section B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ED WIN L. MARSHALL.
