H. GARDNER.
PANTALOONS PRUTECTOR. N0.176,Z9Z. Patented Apri118,1876.
Wm; %M 6 Am? N. PEI'ERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY GARDNER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO CLARENCE HOLLYDAY, OF SAME PLACE, AND FANNIE SCOTT GARDNER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PANTALOONS-PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
[76,292, dated April 18, 1876; application filed August 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY GARDNER, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pantaloons-Protectors and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use-the same, reference being had to the accompa nying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The same letters and figures of reference are used to indicate the corresponding parts.
After describing the invention, its nature and extent will be shown in the claim.
The object of my invention is to protect the bottom of pantaloons from being soiled and worn bythe water and mud in stormy weather.
I am aware that several devices have been patented to accomplish this object, but no invention has yet appeared which seems to be practically adapted to the end sought. My invention is both practical and economical, is easily and quickly applied to the bottom of the pantaloons, and is as speedily removed. My device is so small that it can becarried in the vest pocket. It weighs but one ounce;
Figure 1 shows my protector attached to the leg of the pants just above the heel, shown by the letter A. Fig. 2 shows the center spring B and the two smaller springs at either end, 0 C. All of the springs are covered by the two leaves of the pants-protector, the springs being placed on the inside of the water-proof covering. Fig. 3 shows an enlarged sectional view of one end of my protector as seen from the inside. The letters a.
a are the ends of the rivets on the inside, which have an oval or convex surface, designed to impinge, by pressure on the pantaloons, and so firmly fasten the spring to the the pantaloons, without perforating or in anywise injuring them. The rear or center spring is provided with rivets, made in the same way and for the same purpose. Fig. 4 showsa plan view of my protector folded upon itself. The two lines meeting at the letters D F show the top edges of my protector when placed in the upright position which it assumes when on the pants. The line D G E shows the convex form of its lower edge when folded upon a flat surface. Fig. 5 shows a perspective view of my invention as it appears when ready to be adjusted to the pantaloons.
My protector is made by molding the rubber or other water-proof material. This makes a better article than could be made by sewing the pieces together after being cut out. By making it in one piece, without seam or .stitch, it more efiectually keeps the water out, and gives a neater and more finished appearance to the protector. I do not intend, however, to limit my invention. entirely to a molded protector, although that is a preferable mode of manufacture. The metallic springs are nickel-plated, which prevents any appearance of rust from gathering on them.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pantaloons-protector made of india-rubber or other water-proof material, and so constructed as to embrace the outer and inner sides of the garment at the bottom, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. A pantaloons-protector provided with the springs B G C, having the oval projections a a, or their equivalents, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th of August, 1875.
HENRY GARDNER. Witnesses:
EDWARD B. MOORE, FRANoIs JOHNSTON.
