Description

(No Model.) I I N. J. BUCHANAN.
SKIRT PROTECTOR.
No. 510,324, Patented Dec. 5, 1 893 ajialaizg/ ms NATIONAL LITNOGRAFHING COMPANY.
WASHINGTON. n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NANCY J. BUCHANAN, OF ICKESBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SKI RT-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510, 324, dated December 5, 1893. Application filed March 16, 1893- Serial No. 466.347. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NANCY J. BUCHANAN, of Iokesburg, in the county of Perry, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce an improved device for protecting the skirts of ladies dresses from mud, or the like, in bad weather.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my protector, showing a skirt in position upon it. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the skirt removed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, showing the apron or cover let down as it is in practice before it is turned up over the edge of the skirt to protect it.
Referring to the figures on the drawings: 1 indicates a waist band, from which depends a support preferably made of tapes or straps 2, preferably secured to the waist band.
3 indicates a rubber skirt which is detachably secured, as by buckles or buttons 5, for example, to the tapes that depend from the waist band. The length of the skirt, when united to the tapes, is a little greater than that of the dresses ordinarily used. This skirt is preferably made of rubber cloth having the rubber side turned inward.
Upon the end of the skirt is fixed a separate cover 6 which, in practice, is turned up over the ends of the skirts that are to be protected, thus covering the lower edges thereof and keeping them securely enveloped in a rubber coating. It is obvious that the cover will retain its position when turned up to protect the bottom of the dress. Its free edge is of smaller circumference than the edge secured to the rubber skirt 3. The cover may be made separate and sewed to the skirt,or may be made in one piece with it. The top of the cover, or that part which is uppermost when it is turned up, is preferably ornamented somewhat.
I do not confine myselfto the details of construction of the garment here shown, but reserve the right to modify and vary it at will within the scope of my invention.
What I claim is A skirt protector, consisting of a skirt suspended from a waist band by depending tapes, and a continuous cover secured to the lower edge of the skirt, having its free edge of smaller circumference than the edge secured to the skirt, and adapted to be turned up to protect the bottom of the dress and to be retained in that position by the variance in the circumference of its free and. secured edges, substantially as specified.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto subscribed my name.
NANCY J. BUCHANAN.
