Description

F. P. FLANAGAN.
HAT-VENTILATOR. No.175.959. Patented Apri111,1876.
I ZM BY D, C N-PErERs, PHOTU-LITHOGRAPH ER WASHINGTON UNITED STATES PATENT DFFIGE.
FRANCIS P. FLANAGAN, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAT -VENTI LATORS.
Specification torming part of Letters Patent No. 175,959, dated April 11, 1876; application filed March 6, 1876. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS P. FLANAGAN, of Springfield. in the county of Halnpden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Ventilator, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of the gauze cover of the ventilating-hole applied so as to cover and hide the eyelet used to bind the hole artd keep the gauze in shape, thus making a neater, finer, and more acceptable construction than that heretofore used, which exposed the metal eyelet and made a cheap appearance-very detrimental to a fine hat.
Figure l is a perspective view of a hat having a ventilator contrived according to my in vention. Fig. 2 is a top view of a section of the hat having the ventilator. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections cutting the ventilator in the center.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the top of the hat; B, the gauze cover of the ventilator-hole; and C the eyelet, by
which the gauze is secured; also the edge of the hole-band. I propose to apply the gauze over the eyelet, as shown, so as to conceal it from view on the outside of the hat, and will secure it in any approved way, but I prefer to pass it through the hole along with the eyelet, and head or flange the inner end down on it, as shown at a, Fig. 4c, or clinch the rivets b, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hat-ventilator herein described, consisting of a gauze cover, B, and an eyelet, C, the piece of gauze forming the cover, being fitted over the eyelet and passed with the same through a hole in the hat, and then secured by clinching the eyelet, as and for the purpose set forth.
FRANCIS P. FLANAGAN.
