PATENT @runen WILLIAM R. MILLER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURE OF BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,920, dated February 4, 1879; application led July 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. R. MILLER, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of 'Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Boots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the manufacture of boots 5 and the invention consists in a counter and seam protector, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and arrangement, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a section through the foot of the boot, counter, and protector; and Fig. 3 is an inside view, showing the counter-protector.
In the drawings, A denotes the front of the boot, and B the back. Before these parts are secured together the counter C is secured in place by a row of stitches, D, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. rJhe counter-protector A is then secured to the back B by a row of stitches,E,eXtendingup alongthe side of each eye-seam G, and then by a row of stitches, F, extending .around the back, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The counter-protector A extends a suitable distance above the counter C, and is kept in place by a row of stitches, H, passing up the center of the back, and extending from the upper edge of the counter to the top of the counter-protector, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The counter-protector is formed with laps I, which cover the eye-seam to the top edge ot the counter, and then cross the eye-seam at an angle. rlhese laps I are secured over the eye-seams by a row of stitches, J, passing through the front A near the eye-seam, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of drawings.
I am aware that counter protectors have been used extending over the seam and attached to the front of the boot by a vertical seam parallel with the main seam, and do not broadly claim such, bnt confine my claim to the construction set forth, by means of which the main seam is relieved of any stiffness resulting from covering it with leather, and a saving of weight and material is made.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A boot provided with a counter-protector, as shown, the upper part being stitched to the back behind the eye or main seam, and the lower part provided with laps extending over the eye or main seam and stitched to the front of the boot, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. R. MILLER.
