N. PETERS. FHOTO-LITNOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND A. THOMPSON, OF AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,086, dated July 29, 1879; application filed March 19, 1879.
4 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND A. THOMPSON, of Amherst, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of a hat embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a portion thereof, showing the band. Fig. 3 is a similar section, showing the band and bow. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section in the plane of the line :0 as, Fig. 3.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to the trimming of hats with unselvaged material or fabric; and consists in a band formed of a strip of muslin or other fabric, which is folded on one or both edges and attached to the hat at either or both of such edges by a line of stitches passing through the fold or folds; also, in a bow consistin g of a strip of fabric which is folded on its edges, bent or folded at its opposite ends, and attached to the band or the hat at such ends; further, in the band and bow combined with each other.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a hat having combined therewith a band, B, and a bow, 0, made in accordance with my invention. I make the band B of a strip of fabric-usually muslin-which is cut off wider than the width of band desired, and has raw edges. In applying the band B, said edges of the strip of fabric are folded or bent, as at d, and then the strip is attached to the hatcrown at the upper edge by a line of stitching, 6, passed through the fold or folds. By this arrangement of the stitches e, I not only produce a firm attachment of the band to the hat, but also insure the retention of the fold on the upper edge of the band.
In some cases the strip of fabric composing the band B is folded only on the upper edge, where it is attached to the hat; and, if desired, this strip may be stitched to the hat at both edges.
The bow 0 consists of a strip of fabric similar to the band B, and the same is preferably plaited. The strip composing this bow is folded on both edges, and bent or folded at its opposite ends, where it is attached to the band B or to the hat by stitching, (not shown,) the same being situated at the point where the ends of the band meet or overlap, so that this junction is thereby concealed.
In the example shown, both ends of the strip composing the bow G are bent under the edges of the band B, (see Fig. 3 but in some cases the lower bent end of said strip is left without or above the band. The upper end of said bow-strip 0, however, is usually bentunder the band B, and before the latter is fastened, and said end of the strip is confined by the line of stitching e at the upper edge of the band.
By the construction of the band B and bow G the cost thereof is reduced as compared with the old style of trimming, while their durability and wear are increased to a great extent.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a hat, of a band consisting of a strip of muslin or other fabric, which is folded 011 one or both edges, and attached to the hat at either or both of such edges by a line of stitching passing through the fold or folds, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with a hat and its band, of a bow consisting of a strip of muslin or other fabric, which is folded on its edges, bent or folded at its opposite ends, and attached to the band or to the hat at such ends, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with a hat, of a band consisting of a strip of muslin or other fabric, which is folded on one or both edges, and attached to the hat-crown at either or both of such edges by a line of stitching, and of abow consisting of a strip of muslin or other fabric, which is folded on its edges, bent or folded at its ends, and attached to the band or the hat at such ends, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 8th day of March, 1879.
EDMUND A. THOMPSON.
