Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE ROBERT S. MANNING, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKING-PIPES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,474, dated March 2S, 1876 application tiled February 15, 1576.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT S. MANNING, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Smoking-Pipes, ot' which the following is a specification:
My invention consistsA in constructing a smoking-pipe with a double stem, the inner member, on which the mouth-piece is formed, extending within the main stem of the pipe as' far as the bowl and being channeledl so as to .receive and collect oil and other liquid matter which, when the inner stem is turned within its socket, may be removed from the groove through a slot in the under part of the main stem of the pipe.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section ot' a pipe illustrating` the invention. Fig. 2 is an underside view with the mouth-piece and inner stem removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4-is a view of the inner stem and mouth-piece detached.
A represents the main stem of the pipe, and B the bowl. The latter may be ot common form, and communicates with the stem through a small aperture, I1. In the under side of the stem A is formed a longitudinal slot, a, extending from a point under the aperture b nearly to the extremity of the stem.
C represents an inner stem, on which the mouthpiece C is formed, or to which a separate mouth-piece of any preferred shape or material may be applied. The smokingaperture c is made in customary manner Within the mouth-piece, and is turned upward, as shown at d, within the main stem A, so as to communicate with the interior ot' the said stem. The inner stem C is constructed with a groove, D, extending from a point in i'ront of the inner orilice d of the mouth-piece to a point beneath the orifice b of the bowl. The said groove constitutes a pocket for containing oil and liquid matter which is collected from the smoke.
Operation: While the parts arein the position shown in Figs. l and 3, an air-tight duct is at'- ford ed for the smoke from the bowl B, through the orifice b, groove D, and stem A and orifice d, to the discharge-oritce cot' the mouth-piece, the groove D constituting an enlarged chamber, through which the smoke passes, causing deposit of oil and other 1iquid matter from the smoke in a manner which is common with many improved forms of smoking-pipes. As often as may be desirable, this liquid matter may be removed with the greatest readiness by simply'turning the inner stem G Within its socket in the main pipe-stem A so as to expose the groove D through the slot a, of the pipe-stem. As a modification of my invention, the pipe may be made with the inner part of the inner stem otsemi-cylindrical form,
so that the slot a may be closed or opened asA required by a simple inversion ot' the inner stem without employing a groove or pocket therein, or an inner stem or a simple slide of any shape may be employed which will close the slot a when in position and will open it when drawn out; but l prefer to construct the pipe with a pocket or oil-receptacle, D, in substantially the manner herein described and represented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The pipe constructed with a longitudinal slot, a, in the stem and with a plug, C, inserted within the stem to close the said slot, substantially as shown. l
2. The plug or inner stern (J, constructed with a groove, D, in combination with the' pipe A B, constructed with a longitudinal slot, a, in its stem, substantially as and l'or the purposes set forth.
