To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLEs Miirnnws, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Compound Smoking-Tube for Smoking Tobacco or other Substances in a Finely-Divided State; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in whichf Figure l represents an elevation of my compound smokingtube ready for smoking. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation ofthe inner or containing tube. Fig. 4L is an elevation of the outer or drafttube. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the mouth-J piece. Fig. 6 is a plan or top view of a piece of paper used in closing up one end of the inner or containing tube. Fig. 7 is a plan or top View of my ash-pan. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the same.

This invention consists in arranging two tubes one inside the other, the outer tube to be provided with a mouth-piece, which consists of a short tube of thick and firm paper or pasteboard, and the inner tube,which contains the tobacco or other substance to be smoked in a iinely-divided state, to be closed at the upper end in a peculiar manner, and to tit loosely into the outer tube, so as to leave a sufficient space for the smoke to pass between the tubes up to the mouthpiece.

The invention further consistsin arranging an ash-pan in such a manner that it slides on the compound smoking-tube by means of a loop, and which is-so constructed that the ashes dropping off from the lighted end of the tube are deposited in the ash-pan without inconvenience to the smoker.

To enable others to fully understand and construct my invention, l will proceed to describe the same.

C is the outer or draft tube, constructed out/ o thin paper, and D is themouth-piecawhich ts into the upper end of the draft-tube @,and is constructed of thick and lirm paper or pasteboard, being about one and three-fourths or two inches long. The mouthpiece lits closely into the draft-tube, so as to leave no other passage for the smoke but through the centralopening oi the same.

E is the inner or containing tube, constructed also of ,thin paper, and fitting loosely into the draft-tube Q, seas to leave a passage for the smoke between the two tubes, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper end of this tube Eis c'l-esed up by a piece o1" paper, F, a plan or top View of which is shown at Fig. 6. The shape of this paper is such that the end of the tubeis chainfered off on two sides, so that when lthe tube E is placed within the draft-tube C the upper end of the same does not cover up entirely the central opening of the mouth-piece. By this arrangementthc draft is considerably facilitated.

It must be remarked that the inner tube, E, is of such aiength that the same,when inserted into the draft-tube C, with its closed end forward, sliding into the same until stopped by the inner end ofthe mouth-piece, proj ects withits open end a little beyond the draft-tube. The inner tube, E, is now charged with nely-cut tobacco or other substance in a finely-divided state, the end of the tube is twisted, as shown in Fig. l, and the cpmpound smoking-tuleis then ready for consumption. "W hen lighted, the ashes from the tubes drop off very readily, and in order to overcome a great inconvenience arising from this sourcelhave constructed an ash-pan. This is shown in Fig. 1 as applied to the compound smoking-tube, and also shown detached in Figs. 7 and 8. The ash-pan consists :of a cup, G, rather widerthan the diameter of the compoundtubeand'a'loop, 4

H, is attached to the cup, of such a size that it slides readily ou the tube A. l/Vhen applied tothetube, the ashes droppingfrom the lighted end of the same are deposited in the cup G; and it will be understood that it is necessary as the ltube is consumed to bring the loop l-Lnear 1 to the mouth-piece, which latter is at the same time protected b'y the loop frombeingburned.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl l l. Arranging the tubes C and E with the mouth-piece D in such relation to each other that they form a compound smoking-tube for smoking tobacco or other substance in a linely-divded state7 the Whole being Constructed and arranged as specified.

2. Closing the upper end of the tube E in sueh a manner that the same, when inserted into the draft-tube G and brought close up to the inner end of .the mouth-piece D7 leaves a sufficient space for the passage of the-smoke up through the oentral'opening of the mouthpiece, as described.

3. Constructing an ash-pan in such a manner the saule slides on the compound smokingtube by means of a loop7 H, 'so that the ashes dropping from the lighted end of the tube are deposited in the ash-pan,s11bstantially as specifred.
