Description

ROESLER & FREY.
Match Box.
No.` 22,979.. Patented Feb. 15, 1859.
POCKET MATCH-BOX.
Specfication of Letters Patent No. 22,979, dated February 15,` 1859.
To alt 'wh-om it may concern:
Be it known that we, ADoLrH RoEsLnR and CHARLES FREY, of Warsaw, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket Match-Boxes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.
The nature of our invention consists in having two tapering cylinders arranged, so, when one is set in the other, a space of the thickness of a match is left between them. To the outside cylinder, a rod or tube is attached to the bottom, which is slipped loosely through an opening in both bottom and top of the inside cylinder. A spiral spring is wound around said tube, to which it is attached with one end, and with the other end said spring is fastened to the inside cylinder, which is then provided with a catch for the purpose of winding said spring up. Another spring is fastened to the outside of the inside cylinder, a knob of which, by winding up t-he inside spring, catches in a. hole, that is made through the outside cyl.- inder.
A slide is fitted between both cylinders for the purpose of pushing the matches, (that are put between the cylinders) vout through. an opening in the cover of the box, said opening is provided with two sharp pointed plates, which scratch and ignite the match.
To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation: reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification.
A, is a cylinder, provided inside with strip, a, see Fig. III.
B, is a narrower cylinder, so when placed in cylinder A, it will leave a space of the thickness of a match between them. Cylinder B, is provided outside with strip, C, see Fig. II, spring, al, is attached to cylinder, B, the head of said spring is fitted in a hole, that is made through cylinder A,
A tube, E, is fastened to the bottom of cylinder A, and slipped loosely through an opening in both, bottom and top of cylinder B. A spiral spring, is fastened with one end to tube, E, and with the other end to cylinder, B, see F ig. II. Catch, f, is fastened on the top of cylinder B, a slide g, is arranged through an opening in the bottom of cylinder A, between the two cylinders for the purpose ofV pushing the matches out through an opening in cover 71:1, see F ig. IV. Said opening is provided with two sharp pointed plates c, a mantle m, may be slipped over cylinder A, that will make the box the same width on bottom and top.
From the above description it will be seen, that spring O, will be wound up, by turning cylinder, B, by means of catch, f, the head of spring CZ, snaps in a hole in cylinder, A, and keeps it from springing back then the room between the two cylinders may be filled with matches. Now push the head of spring CZ, back, and spring O, pulls cylinder B, strip e, pushes the matches tight together against slide, g, now pull the slide back, and the matches then lie against strip, a, and by pushing the slide forward, pass through the opening in the cover of the box between the sharp pointed plates, which scratch and ignite the match, and so luntil they are all out.
Having now described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isi l. The cylinders A, and B, provided with strips a, and e, and spring el.
2. Tube E, provided with spring O, the whole being arranged substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
ADOLPH ROESLER. CHARLES FREY.
