Description

ROESLER & FREY.
Lighting Device. I
Patented May 18, 1858.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. ROESLER AND CHAS: FREY, OF \VARSAW, ILLINOIS.
SELF LIGHTING AND EXTINGUISHING LANTERNS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,302, dated May 18, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AnoLPI-I Ronsnnn and CHARLES FREY, of Warsaw, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois,
have invented a new and improved mode of lighting and extinguishing lanterns, whereby lanterns may be lighted as well in the open air as in the house, and also extinguished without opening any part of the lantern; and we dohereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in providing the lantern with a box filled with matches, a slide is fitted in the lower end of said box and is connected with two arms and springs, and a rod provided with a knob, that extends above the top of the lantern. hen a light is wished, press the said knob downward, then a rod attached to one of the arms will operate, in throwing off the extinguisher, that generally covers the wick; at the same time, the slide presses the match forward through an opening provided with two sharp pointed plates which ignite the match, which then ignites the wick. The extinguisher is connected with. a turning rod which is provided with two plates so if another trigger is pressed downward a rod touches one of said plates and the extinguisher is thrown over on the wick and so the light is put out.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, is the lantern, containing the lamp B.
C, is a box in which the matches are put through the top opening (Z, cl.
Z) is a cap, to which spring (Z is attached to keep the matches in good order as shown in Figure II.
E, E, are arms, one on each side of box C, which are connected on their lower end with a. slide F, and on their upper end with rods 70, Z: and g, which is provided with knob 7L.
2', z, are springs attached to box C, and pushing against the upper ends of arms E, E.
L, L are two sharp pointed plates attached to box C.
m, is a rod provided with a spring 39, inclosed in cylinders 72, and 1" as shown in Fig. III.
0 is a knob attached to the cylinder 7.
p is the extinguisher, g, a turning rod provided with plates T and u, and catch S, which by turning the rod 9, prevents the extinguisher from falling entirely over by catching on one of the supporters R, R.
The box C is attached to the door '0, so there is nothing thatwill hinder by opening the door and taking out the lamp.
From the above description it will be seen, that by pressing knob 71, downward, rod 72 touches plate T rod q turns and the extinguisher is removed from the wick; at the same time the arms E, E, drag the slide F, which presses a match a forward through an opening provided with the sharp pointed plates L, L, which scratch and ignite the match which then ignites the wick. The springs, i, i, drag the arms E, E, and slide F, back to their former position, and another match is ready. By pressing knob 0 downward rod m strikes plate a, which turns rod Q and so the extinguisher 0 is thrown over on the wick and the light is put out.
Having now described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The box C, provided with spring (Z as shown in Fig. II plates L, L, springs i, a, and arms E, E.
2. We do not claim the slide F, separately, but we claim the slide F, rods 70, 7c, and g in combination with arms E, E, substantially arranged as described.
3. We do not claim the extinguisher p separately but we claim the supporters R,R, plates T, and a, catch S, rod Q, in combination with the extinguisher p, the whole be ing arranged substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
ADOLPH ROESLER. CHARLES FREY.
