Description

D. E. EATON.
, Alarm Apparatus. N0.13,73s. Patented 0m. 30, 1855.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIQE DANIEL E. EATON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOB TO HIMSELF AND P. O
EATON.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,738, dated October 30, 18 55.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. EATON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of hI-assachusetts, have invented an Improved Burglar Annunciator or Alarm Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in. the following specification and the accompanying drawings, letters, figures, and references thereof.
In such drawings, Figure 1, denotes a side elevation; Fig. 2, a top view, and Fig. 3 an end elevation, of my said improved alarm apparatus which when in use is to be fastened to the side of a door frame, and near to the top or upper part of the door thereof, the working parts of it to be hereinafter described. being fixed to a metallic frame or bracket, A, provided with two shelves, 0, being the lower and b the upper as seen in Figs. 1, and 2. Upon the lower of these shelves there is arranged a lamp, B, upon which and near to its wick tube, 0, is fixed a match holder, C, composed of a thumb spring, (Z, and a stationary projection or post, 0, (arranged as seen in Figs. 1, and 2,) the spring pressing toward the post so as to support a match when it is placed between them.
Above the upper shelf, Z), there is a horizontal shaft D, which is supported by a bracket f, and a post E, extended upward from the shaft a, such shaft being connected to the inner end of a coiled spring F, whose outer end is attached to the bracket or stud f, projecting therefrom.
Between the wick tube, 0, and the match holder C, and fixed to one end of the shaft D, is an igniting sector, G, whose inner surface or that next to the match holder is made rough in any proper manner, so that when the sector is moved against the explosive composition of the friction match sustained by the match holder it will fire or explode the same. The shaft, D, has also affixed to it an escapement hammer .or cook H, which is simply an arm of metal arranged close against the outer side of the post, E, and directly over an escapement rod, I, supported on or by a spring, 9, affixed to the shelf, a. Under the shelf, a, there is arranged any alarm apparatus, X, such as is in common use in alarm clocks,
the striking hammer of said apparatus be ing seen at K. It is made to act upon its bell, L, arranged as seen in Fig. 1.
By the pressure of the spring, F, the arm or hammer is borne down upon the top of the escapement rod, I, so as to depress the said rod and the spring upon which it rests, the said rod being made to extend downward and hook under a bent arm, h, extending from the rocker shaft of the pallet, i, of the escapement wheel K, of the alarm apparatus. hen the rod I, is relieved from the pressure of the hammer, the spring, 9, will lift the rod, so as to cause it to move the pallet, 1', up to the wheel, 70, in such manner as to prevent the escapement wheel from vibrating the said pallet, so as to cause the hammer K, to strike upon the bell.
Underneath the shaft D, and turning horizontally upon the shaft, 6, is a trigger or lever M, which has a bolt N jointed to it and made to extend and slide through a post E, and also to enter a hole, Z, made through the hammer H, when said hammer is turned down into a vertical position. The said bolt should be so applied to its trigger lever in such manner that when the latter is moved in one direction it shall move the bolt for ward, and when moved in the opposite direction it shall retract the said bolt.
The annunciator or apparatus herein above described is not only intended to sound an alarm, but also to inflame a lamp, and when it is used one arm of the trigger should project by the door in such manner that while the door is being opened, it may move said trigger far enough to produce a complete withdrawal of the bolt from the arm or hammer H, in order that said arm when. thus relieved from retention in a vertical position by the bolt may be thrown by the spring, F, smartly over and upon the top of the rod, I. In my said apparatus, the match holder is stationary while the igniting surface or sector G is movable or is made to move against the match when sustained by the said holder, the said sector operating to throw the extinguisher, 0, off the wick at the same time it ignites the match. The trigger lever may be connected with the wire of a bell pull of a street door of the house in which the annunciator may be, the connection being such, that when said bell pull is drawn outward, it may cause such a movement of the trigger as will put the annunciator in operation. In this Way my alarm apparatus may be made especially useful to a physician or apothecary or any person whose avocation may cause him to be occasionally awakened during the night time, the apparatus not only sounding an alarm but at the same time striking a light.
My invention or improvement rests in the peculiar arrangement of the operative parts, situated above the shelf, a, such causing them to operate with great efficiency and with little liability of derangement.
I do not claim the combination of a lamp and an alarm apparatus, a match holder and an igniting surface; nor employing therewith a contrivance for casting the extinguisher off the lamp, but
What I do claim is,
Arranging both the igniting sector G, and escapement hammer, H, on one rotary shaft (controlled by a spring as above set forth), in combination with so arranging the wick tube, 0, the match holder C, and the escape ment rod, I, that immediately after the trigger bolt N, has been withdrawn from the escapement hammer, not only shall such hammer be thrown over upon the top of the escapement rod, but the igniting sector be caused to discharge the extinguisher off the wick tube as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature this eleventh day of September A. D. 1855.
