O. E. PICKETT, OF NORTH AUBURN, ANDR.4 S.ILUCE, OF LAWSVILLE CENTRE, PENSYLVANIA.
Leners Patent No. mfiiaczaadlea-mry 11, 186s.
` IMPBOVED Pins Ann Beastie-ALARM.
T01' ALL WHOM IT MAY GONGERN:
Be it known that we, O. E. PICKETT, of North Auburn, in the county of Susquehanna, and State of Pennsylvania, and R. S. LUCE, of Lawsville, in the county and State aforesaid, have invented new and useful Improveniente in- Fire and Burglar-Alarms; and we do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and'exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of,4 this specification.
lFigure l represents a side view of our improved burglar and {ire-alarm.
Figure 2 is a sectional end view, cut by the linee: w, tig. 1. I
Figure 3 is a partial view, showing the mode of lighting a candle with a match when the alarm is started.
Figure 4 is a top view of the alarm set on trigger.
Similar 'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in'the construction cfa re audiburglar-alarm, which consist in an arrangement of tripping-devicesin connection with a clock-movement and bell, whereby analarm is sounded,
when, by fire or the entrance of aburglar-in a house, the connection is broken by which the alarm is held; and further, in the arrangement of a device' forigniting a match-to light a candle or lamp when the alarm is sounded, Vas hereinafter described. l A
I Within a suitable frame or box, A, is placed part of an ordinary cloc1 movement, of whiehais the spring,` b the crown-wheel, and c the eseapement, connected as usual with the hammer cl, to strike upon the bell B, in order to sound an alarm. Attached to the eseapement e is a trip-rod, e, which holds the escapenient in the wheel when the spring is wound up, by means of the point of al bent-lever trigger, g, one end of which is kept in position by a set, 7a, which'lisudesigned to be eonnectefdjwith and by aeoid 'or wire extending through a house, and so arranged that it shall bebro'ken' by the entranee'of abrurglar or by re, when the setJi will be released, andthus let the trigger free from the'trip-rod e, so that the spring a can act and sound the alarm.
In connection -with this alarm'farrangement, a device is' also provided for strik-ing a light by the ignition of a match. A long igniting-plate, C, sct in slides z' z', and having a rough corrugated surface at each end for light'- ing a match, is attached to a spiral spring, h, in suoh'manner that it shallY be drawn within the box A, when the corrugated end of Ithe plate is not drawn outside of the box, as shown in fig. l, and is not heldin that position by means of a lever-frame, m, thatv catches atone end in a notch in the side of the igniting-plate, atom, while. the other end of the pawl is held by a pin on the crown-wheel b, when tllealarm is wound up. The pawl m is kept in place by a spring, s. On the outside of the box a match-holder, 1t, i's attached to a spiral spring, p, by which itis drawn out with a light-ed match to light a candle, as shown in iig. 3. When the alarm is wound. up and set, as before described, tho corrugated end of the plate C is drawn'outside cfrthe box A,and a match is ixed in the holder n, and so plheed, as shown in tig. l, as to be held against the endfof the plate, so that when the alarm is sounded the pawl m is moved, and releases the plate C, when it isdrawn bach by thespring 1:, and the corrugated surface of the end rubs and `ignites the/match on the holder u, which is then drawn upto light a`lamp or candle, as described. I
Having thus describedour invention, we claim as new, and desire to isecureby Letters' Patent- 1. The set L, the lever-trigger lo, and the trip-rbd e, combined with the escapemcnt e, the 'hammer d, the hell B, the wheel 5, and the spring a, when arranged ind operating as and for the purpose described.
2. And vin combination with the alarm-device, we also claim the pawl m, the igniting-plate` C, the spring s, and the matQh-holder n, provided with the spring p, arranged andoperatingas and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification ofl our invention signed by us, this 28th day of December, 1867.
