Description
UNITED STATES VGEORGE R. EAGER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,439, dated March 28, 1876; application tiled March 10, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. EAGER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls and other Garments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a l'ull, clear, and eXactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bei ng had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a front elevation of a pair ot' overalls to which my improvement has been applied, the lower end of the legs being torn oft. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section through the waistband, showing the condition ot'the latter just before adjustment; and Fig. 3, a similar view ai'ter adjustment has been etlected. Fig. 4 represents a detached sectional View taken through the openings on the waistband, and Fig. 5 an elevation otl the same.
My improvement relates solely to that class ot' overalls in which the waistband of the garment is adjusted to the wearer through the instrumentality otl a cord.
In securing the adjustment of these garments to the wearer by means ot' a knot on the end ot' the cord, the hole through which the cord is protruded, as now made, after a time gives way, and no longer retains the knot in position. This destroys the utility of the adjustment, and in a measure renders the garment not simply a source of annoyance to the wearer, but worthless.
To remedy this defect is the object of my improvement; and it consists in arming the hole in the waistband, through which the cord is protruded, with an eyelet or grommet of suitable size, which eftectually prevents alltendency of the opening to tear. It also consists in providing the hollowr waistband with two openings in immediate proximity to each other-the one for the outward passage of the cord for purposes of adjustment, and the other for the inward passage of the free end. of the cord left by adjustment, to stow it out ot' the way. l
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will now proceed to describe it in detail.
The body A of the overalls may be made in the usual way, but Jfor the purposes of this invention the waistband B should be made at least partly hollow, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. Into this hollow waistband is secured one end ot' a cord, a, the other end ot' which is' passed out ofthe vlaistband through an opening, b, armed with an eyelet, c, ot' suitable size and construction for the purpose, it being fastened to the waistband in any proper way; or, instead ot' an eyelet, a grommet, e, or other suitable ring of any proper, strong,
and durable material, may be fitted, and sev cured to the hole by being stitched or otherwise sewed in. This form or style is shown at the opening d, Figs. l and 4.
Thus constructed, the garment is adjusted to the body ot' the wearer by drawing on the cord until the waistband is sutciently tight.
A knot is thentied, so as to hold it tight at that tension, and the free end fot' the cord then slipped through opening d, as shown in Fig. 3, and the operation is complete.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Overalls having a hollow waistband, pro vided with a cord, a, one end oi' which is secured therein, and with an opening armed with an eyelet, c, grommet or ring e, properly secured thereto, for the purpose set forth.
2. Overalls having a hollow waistband, provided with two openings, b and d, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my own I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE R. EAGER.
Witnesses P. HANNAY, A. MoGoLLUM.
