THADDEUS NORRIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHIRT- STUD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,781, dated October 25, 1881. Application filed August 24, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THADDEUS NORRIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Shirt-Studs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to prevent the loss of shirt-studs, and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front View of a series of studs with the tape to which they are confined; Fig. 2, a rear view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the collar-stud; and Figs. 4. and 5, perspective views, showing different ways of making the shirt-bosom studs.
The stud A, for confining the neckband ofa shirt and the collar to the neckband, should be constructed for pern'ianent attachment to the upper end of a tape or band, B; and for this purpose I make in the rear plate, a, of the stud a slot, 1), through which a portion of the tape can be passed, tblded against, and stitched to the main body of the tape. The remaining studs, 1) D D, are confined to the tape, but are adjustable thereon, so that they can be moved to coincide with the stud-holes ot' the shirtbosom, and the lower end of the tape must be so enlarged by folding and stitching, or otherwise, that the studs cannot escape from the lower end of the tape; but while the tape thus keeps the studstogether and prevents loss of any oneor other of them, the tape does not directly assist in retaining the studs in place in the shirt.
In Fig. 4 a strip of metal bentat the ends is secured to the rear plate of a stud, D, the space between the strip and plate beinglarge enough to admit the tape.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the rear plate of the stud is made of quadrangular form, and has two slots, the tape passing from the front of the plate through one slot, and from the rearof the plate through the otherslot.
While the studs with slotted rear plates can be adj usted longitudinally on the tape, they are otherwise confined to the same, so that the loss of the studs is prevented. At the same time the tape presents no impediment to the ready adjustment of the studs in the studholes of the shirt, and the tape, being flexible, cannot be a source of discomfort to the wearer.
I do not desire to claim, broadly, shirt-studs connected together so as to prevent loss; but
I claim as my invention- The combination of a tape, B, with a set of studs, each of which has in front the usual enlargcment for passing through and retention in the button -holes of the shirt-bosom, the highest or neck stud being permanently attached at the back to the tape, and each of the remaining studs having at the back a guide for sliding on the said tape, which is enlarged at the lower end to prevent the escape of the said studs, all as set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, THADDEUS NORRIS.
