A 7- TORN vs."
STEPHEN G. RAIDFORD, OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 12, 1908.
Patented Nov. 5, 1912.
Serial No. 467,123.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN C. RADFORD, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in buttons.
The object of the invention is to provide a form of button in which the necessity of sewing the button to the garment is avoided, the construct-ion being such that the button may be readily attached to and detached from the garment at will.
With the above primary object, and other incidental objects, in view, the invention consists of the devices and parts, or their equivalents, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of a fragment of'two flaps of a garment, showing my improved button applied thereto, and as passed through the button-hole of one flap thereof; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the button shown in Fig. 1 and through the inner flap of the garment to which the button is detachably connected; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the rear side of the button, showing a small fragment of the garment.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 indicates the main or body portion of the button, which at its center, or approximately its center, is provided with an opening 11, and above the opening is provided with a partly circular slot 12, of a form approximating the shape of the letter C. The uncut portion which is left after the out is made forms a lug 13 which enlarges outwardly so that a narrow neck portion and an enlarged end portion or head are provided.
In Fig. 1 I show a fragment of the garment, the inner flap thereof being indicated by the numeral 14: and the outer flap by the numeral 15. To the inner flap is sewed, by a stitch line 16, or is otherwise secured, the
ends of a tape, cord, thread, or similar device 17. By securing the ends of the tape to the garment a loop is formed, and this loop is first passed from the rear side of the button through the opening 11 to the front side of the button, and thence extended upwardly and hooked over the lug 13 as clearly shown in the drawing. By this arrangement, it will be evident that when it is desired to detach the button, as for instance when a garment is to be washed, all that is necessary to be done is to unhook the loop of the tape from the lug 13, and then pull the button off the tape. hen it is desired to again attach the button, the tape is first passed through the central opening 11, and then the loop of the tape is hooked over the lug, as previously explained.
The outer flap of the garment is shown as provided with a button-hole 18 through which the button is passed, as shown in Fig. 1.
While I have particularly described and claimed my structure as a button, yet I do not wish to be understood as thereby limiting myself specifically to the use of the structure as a button, but desire to be understood as claiming said structure for any purpose for which it may be found adaptable and useful.
What I claim as my invention is:
As an improved article of manufacture, a button provided with a passageway and a slot, the uncut portion left by the slot forming a lug having a narrow neck portion and an enlarged end or head, and a looped tape extending from one side of the button through the passageway and over a portion of the button and back through the slot with the looped end thereof detachably engaging the lug.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN C. RADFORD.
Witnesses:
A. W. Kms'r, HENRY BARBER.
