IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIE SHIELDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 7l,990, dated January 11, 1876; application filed December 29, 1875.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN B. CARTER, of Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neck-Ties, of which the following is a specification The subject of myinvention is a neck-tie shield, formed with a central aperture to receive the button, said aperture being crossed by elastic cords, two in number, which permit the ready passage of the button and prevent its escape.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a rear viewef a tie illustrating the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front View of the shield detached.

A represents a neck-tie shield, formed with a central aperture, B, of any preferred form, and of the necessary size to pass readily over the head of a collar-button, E, of ordinary construction, 0 0 represent elastic cords crossing the aperture B, in such position as to fit closely around the neck of the button when the tie is in position, and to slip readily on or 011' the head thereof, when required, without danger of accidental escape. D represents the bow or silk covering, which is made in any preferred style to suit the taste, and attached to the shield A by stitching or other suitable means.

To set this tie its ends are slipped under the as to hold the tie securely in position. To

take it off the lower part is drawn out and the cords spring, as before, around the margin of the button-head, and readily permit the removal of the tie.

It will be observed that the parallel cords G G are applied on the outer or front face of the neck-tie shield, and cross the hole on each side of the center thereof, so that in setting the tie the button-head first passes through the opening in the shield, and then presses the cords apart and permits them to spring behind it without any manipulation of the cords. To produce this effect it is not necessary that the cords be made of rubber. Ordinary cord or Wire will yield sufficiently, but elastic cords are preferred. 7 Having thus described my invention, what I clainnand desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
