Description

(No Model.) I J. BAUMGARTEN ELASTIC ATTACHMENT FOR NEGKTIE BANDS.

Inventor Wt was as: V

JOSEF BAUMGARTEN, on NEW roan, N. r.
Eras-r10 ATTACHM ENT roe 'NECKTlE BANDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,729, dated March'24, 1896.
' Application filed June 25, 1895.
To all whom it. may concern.
Be it known that I, Josnn Baunoan'rnn, a; citizen of the GermanEmpire, and a resident ofNew York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic Attachments for Necktie-Bands, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an elastic attachment for necktie-bands of simple and cheap form wherever found throughout the several views,
and in which- I Figure 1 is a back view nfa necktie providedwith my improved'form of necktie-band elastic attachment and fastener as the same appears when secured to the necktie-band in position upon the neck of the wearer. Fig. 2 is a like view in detail of such attachment and fastener removed from the band proper of the necktie, and Fig. 3 is an end view in section on the line y y of Fig. 2 of the coil-spring forming the elastic portion of such device.
\Vhile not limited to such use, this attachment is more particularly designed and adapted for use with neckties of the particular form. known as the bow or full-dress necktie.
- In the drawings the reference-nmneral 1 designates the left-hand and 2 the right-hand side portion of the band proper of the necktie, while A designa es the elastic attachment, and B the bow or Lie.
The main portion of the attachment A is composed of a coil-spring 3, formed of suitable spring-wire, and such spring is preferably in cross-section of theilattened or oblong shape shown in Fig. 3. v
The spring 3 is preferably provided at one end with a loop or other suitable device 4 to facilitate the securing thereto of the end of the necktie-band on one side, and the spring 3 is in the -regulating the Serial No. 553,958. on model.)
preferably provided at its other end with a ring or hook 5, adapted to slip over a suitable hook 6, which is secured to the end of the necktie-band in any desired manner, preferably by being sewed thereto by threads passing through holes 7 formed for that purpose back plate 8 of such hook (l, as shown in Fig. 2. The spring 3 is preferably provided at or near the center thereof with a buttonloop 9, preferably formed, as shown, by cx tending the wire of which the coil is composed parallel with the axis ofthe coil at the bottom thereof for a short distance, say a half an inch or so, and then continuing the formation of the coil as before, such button-loop 0 being preferably located, as shown, in the center of the spring 3, so that when the necktie is in place upon the wearer the straight wire forming the bottom of the button-loop 9 will rest underneath the head of the back collar-button 10, as shown in Fig. 1, by which arrangement upward displacement of the attachment and of the necktie-band will be absolutely prevented.
While my improved form of elastic attachment may be used in other positions, I prefer to locate the same exactly opposite to the tie and in the center of bands of equal length; but in any event the bands and spring are 0 such length that when in position on the neck of the wearer the spring will be under sufficient tension to hold the necktie firmly in place.
The coil-spring 3 may be formed of any suitable material, but is preferably of brass or steel wire, and when to be used with darkcolored. goods such wire is preferably japanned, and with white nickeled. The loop 4.- and hook 5 are preferably formed integral with the spring 3 by simply bonding and twisting the ends of the wire forming such spring into the shapes required to form such loop and hook,
The end portions 1 and 2 of the necktieband, the rest ofwhich is formed by the spring A, are each preferably provided means for quickly and easily length thereof, so as to keep the buttonloop 9 in the central position to engage with the rear collar-button; but inasmuch as such devices are well known in the attachment with suitable fSo art and form no part of this invention! have not deemed it necessary-to show ordescribe the same herein;
of the length required; the bow or tie is secured npon'the neck of the wearer-by passin g the loose ends of the attachment and band 1 around the neck from the front and slipping the ring 5 over the hook 6, when the tension 7 of the spring-Will serve to hold the tie in place,
while admitting of'perfectly free movement of the neck and throat.
It is evident thatmany changes may be' made in such'neektie-attaohm'ent and fastener witho at departing from the scope of my invention, and I'do not intend to limit myself to the exact construction shown g bnt,
Having now particularly described and as eertaine'd the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters latent, is-'- In an elastic necktie-band attachment and fastening, the combination with-a coil-spring '3' of oblong form in cross-section and having a button-loop having a bottom bar substantiallyin line with the lower edge of the springeoil, of means for permanently securing one end of the sgmngto one portionof the necktie-band, and means for detachably securing the otherend ofthe s ml to the other portion of the necktie-band,- substantially as shown and, described.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 havesigned my'nama'in presence of tw witnesses, thisfith day of June, 1895- I JOSEF BAUMGARTEN.
