A D. M. READ.
POCKET-BOOK FASTENING,
No.174,740. Patented Marchl. 1876.
N. PETERS, PNOTG-LITNOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON, n c
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
DANIEL M. READ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET-BOOK FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I74,740, dated March 14, 1876; application filed January 3i, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. READ, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Adjustable Fastener for Pocket-Books, &c., of which the following is a specification:
The figure is a longitudinal section of my improved fastener.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of that class of fasteners in which the article to be fastened can be drawn tighter, but cannot be loosened without raising the cap-plate.
The invention consists of the base-plate provided with ratchet-teeth upon its upper side, the spring cap-plate provided with ratchet-teeth upon its lower side, and the double catch hook or claw, constructed and arranged as hereinafter fully described.
A is the base-plate, upon the edges of which are formed points a for fastening it to the pocket-book or otherarticle. To the rear end of the base-plate A is hinged the cap-plate B, which is held in place, when turned down parallel with the plate A, by a spring, 0. The
base-plate Ais made with anofiset, a to' provide room for the hook D, which is made with a hook or claw upon its upper and lower sides, to catch upon ratchet-teeth b a formed upon the lower side of the cap-plate B and the upper side of the base-plate A.
The fastener is thus made witha double catch, which makes it more secure, and less liable to become accidentally unfastened when the pocket-book or other article is drawn together snugly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pocket-book fastening, consisting of the base-plate A, provided with ratchet-teeth a upon its upper side, the spring cap-plate B, provided with ratchet teeth b upon its lower side, and the double catch hook or claw D, constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
DANIEL M. READ.
