N.PETER{PHOTO-UTHOQRAFHER, WASH NGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
' CLARA P. CLARK, OF WAKEFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDER-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. P74481 dated March 7,18Z6; application filed September 4, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARA P. CLARK, of Wakefield, in the countv of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of
which the followingis a specification:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view, showing two of my supporting-hooks connected. Figs. 2 and 3 represent rear perspective views, showing modifications of con slruction. V
This invention has for its object, first, to provide a cheap and efi'ective device for securely connecting skirts, stockings, or other articles of female under-wear to the straps which are usually employed for supporting such garments; and, secondly, to provide a device adapted to connect one garment, such as a-skirt', to its supporting-strap, and at the same time afford means for the suspension of the supporting-strap of a lower garment. or garments, such as the stockings. To these ends my invention consists in the improved deviceswhich I will now proceed todescribe, and point out in my claim.
In the drawings,A represents my improved attaching device, which is composed of a slotted plate, B, having two spring-hooks, C 0, attached to one of its edges. Both of these hooks project in the same direction from the plate B, and are composed of pointed bent rods, the pointed ends of which have a tendency to spring outwardly from the plate, as shown in Fig. 1. DD arebent lugs or catches formed on the plate B, and bent over so as to receive and hold the springing pointed ends of the hooks'C C. The slot 8 of the plate -B is adapted to receive a supporting-strap,
while the hooks C C are engaged with the stocking or other garment to be supported, the plate and hooks constituting a double safety-pin, which is engaged with the garment at two points, and thus supports it -firmly without liability of tearing the fabric or material. In-this device the plate B is provided with a single slot adapted to receive only the strap which supports it, this formbeing intended particularly for attachment to stockings.
Fig. 2 shows a modification of my invention, in which the plate B is supported by a shoulder-strap, L, which enters its slot 8. In this modification the plate B is provided with a second slot or loop,'s; on its rear side,
strap L, and the stockings by the lower strap E, the hooked plate B serving the double purpose of connecting the skirt or other garment to the shoulderstrap L, and supporting the pendent strap E, which supports the stockings; or, in other words, the plate B, when provided with the slot or loop 8, connects the pendent strap E with the shoulderstrap L, besides supporting the skirt or other garment on its hooks.
I prefer to make the plate B, with its hooks, lugs, and loop s, all from one piece of metal, struck up by suitable dies, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. If desired, however, the hooks may be made of wire and soldered separately to the plate B, or they may be made in one piece with the loop s, and soldered or otherwise attached in this form to the plate B,-as shown in Fig. 3.
This device constitutes'an extremely neat and serviceable article for firmly and securely supporting female under-garments without theliability of tearing or unduly stretching them.
The plate may be provided with more than two hooks, if desired, in which case it should bemade longer, and thusgive a more extended bearing to the garments supported.
Having thus fully described my improvement in susp'ender-fastenings, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is
The device A, consisting of the plate B, having slots 8 s, pin-hooks C C, and catches D D, combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification iu the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CLARA P. CLARK.
