ELLEN WHALEN, Ol CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,619, dated January 10, 1893.
Application filed October '7, 1892. Serial No. 448,136 (No model.)
To on whom it may concern! Be it known that I, ELLEN WHALEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cumberland, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Garment-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment supporters, and has for its object to provide a supporting clasp which is attached to one garment and adapted to engage a portion of an adjacent garment, and dispenses with the employment of buttons, and with this object in view the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of garments having portions thereof broken away and the improved device shown applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the improved device detached and on a larger scale, and shown open, a portion of a garment being shown in engagement therewith in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of the supporter detached and looking toward the rear thereof.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the back plate, which is formed with a series of openings 2, for the purpose of receiving stitches or other fastenings to secure said plate in position. The interior of the said plate 1 is formed with an opening 3, and from the upper Wall thereof depends a pair of tongues 4, Which are spaced apart and bent outwardly in curved lines from the said plate to provide engaging hooks adapted to be slipped through an opening, or buttonhole if desired, in a garment. One side of the said plate 1 is formed with a pair of eyes 5, which are spaced apart and receive between them a single eye 6, formed with an outer covering-plate 7, the said eyes 5 and 6 having a pintle 8 passed therethrough to form a hinge-connection for the two plates 1 and 7. The center of the plate 7 is of concavo-convex form, as at 9, into which the hooks of the plate 1 extend when the plate 7 is brought closely against the said plate 1, and by this means the said plate 7 forms a keeper for holding the portion of the garment engaging the hooks of the plate 1 against accidental disconnection. The edge of the plate 7, opposite to the hinge-connection thereof, is supplied with a clasp 10, which consists of a wire loop 11 secured in an opening 12 in said plate 7 and twisted, as at 13, to form a hook 14:. This clasp is locked down against the rear side of the plate 1, when the plate 7 is brought against said plate 1, to thereby hold the two plates closely together.
It will beunderstood that the improved device herein set forth may be applied to any part of a garment for the purpose of a supporting connection, or for any other purpose found applicable, and is especially intended to supplant buttons and analogous fastening devices now commonly employed.
The device may be made in various sizes and suitably ornamented, as may be found desirable and as shown in the accompanying drawing is intended to be applied to boys trousers for the purpose of connecting shirtwaists thereto, and for this purposeit will be observed a very convenient form of fastening is provided. The parts being simple in construction and few in number, can be quickly and cheaply manufactured.
It is to be understood that changes in the form proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of two flat hinged plates connected at the side, one of which is concavoconvex at the central portion of the same and the other provided with a pair of depending hooks extending forwardly and adapted to be covered by the conoavo-convex central portion of the other plate, and a clasp for securing said plates adjacent to each other, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a back-plate having an opening in the center thereof with depending forwardly-bent tongues to form hooks arranged parallel in a vertical plane and extending from the upper wall of said opening, a covering-plate hinged to said back-plate and having a concave-convex central portion to fit over said hooks, and a clasp loosely attached to said covering-plate and having a hook adapted to engage said back-plate to hold both of the said plates adjacent to each other, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in to the presence of two Witnesses.
ELLEN WIIALEN. \Vitnesses:
