armor for the inside of the hand, to protect it in rough'work, such as husking corn and other labor; and it consists in attaching metallic plates, hinged together, to the hands by straps, or by the back part of a glove or mitten, of which the plates form the palm.

In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1' is a side elevation of the armorplate attached to the hands by straps. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the plates and straps. Fig. 3 shows, in plan, a modification, in which, instead of a single finger-plate, as shown in the first and second figures, the fingers are protected by independent jointed plates. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, showing the same as stitched to a glove. 7

The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of the same parts.

The armor-plates consist essentially of three parts. The finger-plate A, covering the fingers, composed of one piece, as shown in Fig.

'1, or of a series of hinged pieces for each finger, as shown in Fig. 3. Secondly, the wrist plate B, which covers that part of the palm of the hands nearest the wrist, and which may be extended, as shown in the shaded lines on Fig. 3, so as to cover and protect the wrist; and, thirdly, the palm-piece O, which is hinged to both the others and'connccts them. The hinge between A and 0 corresponds with the articulation of the fingers, and permits them to be bent in grasping an object; and the hinge between 0 and B corresponds with the articulation between the metacarpal bones and the phalanges. The thumb-plate D is hinged to the wrist-plate, which is there out diagonally, so as to give the proper inclination to the thumb-plate, to enable the thumb to act readily in grasping anything.

When used for husking corn, it will be found advantageous to make the outer edges of the finger and wrist plate serrated, and also the lower edge of the thumb-plate, with sharp points to cut into the husk of the corn, like claws.

E represents an ordinary husking-point attached by straps or rivets to the finger-plate, so as to project out to the side of the forefinger.

The plates may be perforated with small holrs, so as to stitch to the palm of a glove or mitten, or-they may be attached to the hands by straps, of which I have illustrated a convenient arrangement.

The strap F is riveted on each side to the upturned edges of the finger-plate, which are intended to protect the sides of the fingers.

passing across the back of the hands, passes through an eye in the other edge of the palmplate, when it is brought over the back of the hands and wrist, and around under the latter, when its free end is seized by the spring-catch H. The elastic strap I is riveted to straps F and G, so as to hold them in place andbring them back to position when the hand is opened. D is a strap across the back of the thumb from edge to edge of the thumb-plate D.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secureby Letters Patent is- 1. The combination of the finger, wrist, palm, and thumb plates, articulated so that when placed on the palm of the hands the device may be closed to grasp an object between the plates, substantially as set forth.

2. The plates A, B, U, and D, hinged together and combined with straps, or the described equivalent, for fastening the system.
