Description

n.1. LEWIS. WAGoNeBRAKE.
Patented Feb. 22,1876.
WZTN f SES N.FETERS, PHOTOLITHOGRAFHER, WASHlNGTQN. D C."
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ROBERT T. LEWIS, OF ATALISSA, IOWA.
-IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.*l73,975, January 22, 1876.
t To all `whom it may concern:
-being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lock-lever for wagon-brakes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art y to which my invention appertains to make and use the "same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l` is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the lever.
A represents the arch, formed with a series of inclined notches, a a, on its inner side, and a barrel or tube, B, at each end, which projects inward, and through which the bolt b passes.l for fastening the arch to the side of1 the wagon-body. From the inner end of one of the barrels or tubes B projects a side strap, O,to
a'point at or near the center of the arch.
The arch A, barrels B B, and side strap C are all to be made in one piece, of malleable, wrought, or cast iron.
Dis the handle or lever, made of malleable,
dated February 22, 1876; application filed wrought, or cast iron, pivoted at its lower end to the wagon-box by a bolt, d, passing, also, through the end of the side strap C, andthe lever or handle extending up between the wagon-box andthe arch. The lever D is provided ywith a tooth, shoulder, or oset, c, to enter either ofthe notches a of the arch A, into which it is held by a iii-at spring, G, secured on the outside of the lever by the bolt y d, and extending'up on the ouside of the arch,
as shown. The tension of this spring is regu lated by means of a bolt, h, and nut i, the bolt passing through the springand the lever. At the point where this bolt passes through the lever a slot, m, is made in the lever, for the reception of the connecting-rod, which is pivoted in said slot by the same bolt h.
The end of the spring Gr, where it Works against the arch, is to be plated with steel or 4 iron, to prevent it from wearing out. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as,new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the arch A, lever D, and spring G, of the tension-regulating bolt h and nut t, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that 1 clailn the foregoing I have hereunto set rmy hand this 6th day of January, 1876.
