ADJUSTABLE STEEL I-IAlVIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A11 '7, 1917.
Application filed July 27, 1916. Serial No. 111,675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jesse A. Soon", a citizen of the United States, and resident of Fullerton, in the county of Nance and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Steel Hames, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to harness and more particularly to new and useful improvements in adjustable hames.
The primary object of my invention is to provide in a simple and compact structure a new and improved type of'hame having adjusting means associated therewith, whereby to permit use of the hame in connection with various sizes of draft-animals and to adjust the trace connection, whereby to obtain the most efficient draft.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hame of the class described having means associated therewith for increasing or decreasing the length of the hame.
A further object of my invention is to provide a hame of the class described which is simple in construction, strong and durable, cheap to manufacture, and efiective in operation.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved adjustable hame will appear from the following detail description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is an enlarged vertical sectional view of a hame embodying the improvements of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates the body of my improved hame, said body being tubular, elliptical in cross section, and tapering throughout its length, the lower free end thereof being provided with the usual curved portion 2. I do not limit myself to the shape of the body 1 in cross section, since this body may be U-shaped or rectangular as desired.
For increasing the length of the body 1, I provide a tapering section 3 receivable in the body 1 adjacent the upper free end thereof, said section 3 having the upper free end thereof curved as at 4- and having the usual connecting link 5 carried thereby.
In order to maintain the section 3 in adusted positions, I provide a relatively heavy plate 6 arranged within the section, said plate being engaged by a screw 7 as indicated at 8, said screw having a head 9 to which a wrench or the like may be applied for inserting and removing the screw. A slot 10 is formed in the body 1 to accommodate the shank of the screw 7, a plurality of rivets 11 being arranged transversely of the body, in spaced relation, adjacent said slot, whereby to strengthen the body adjacent the slot and to receive the screw between any two of said rivets.
For adjusting the angle and height of draft I provide a tug clip 12 having an opening 13 in the outer free end thereof to which the trace is to be connected. The lower part of the body 1 is provided with a slot 14 for accommodating the tug clip 12, a bolt 15 being arranged longitudinally within the body, said bolt having the free ends thereof mounted in partitions 16 and 17, the enlargement 18 on the partitions 16 serving to receive the threaded end of the bolt 15 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
A plurality of rivets 19 similar to the rivets 11 are provided, said rivets 19 extending transversely of the body 1 as shown to advantage in Fig. 3. The clip 12 is bifurcated on its inner end as indicated at 20 and formed with loops 21 through which the bolt 15 is adapted to engage, said bifurcated portion embracing one of the rivets 19.
A loop or strap 22 is arranged ad acent the upper free end of the body 1 for accommodating the reins, said strap being secured in any desired manner. A ring 23 is carried in a U-shaped bracket member 24: adjacent the lower free end of the body 1, said ring serving to accommodate the breast strap. Other necessary attachments may be associated with the hame of my invention, these attachments not being shown in view of the fact that they do not enter into the invention.
In using my improved hame it will be seen that by removing the bolt 15 the trace connector or tug clip 12 may be removed and adjusted to various positions relative the body 1 in order to reach the des1red angle and direction of draft, thus increasing the efiiciency of the hame and helping the draft-animal. The enlargement 18 is permanently fastened to the partition 16 to receive the threaded end of the bolt when said bolt is inserted into position in the partitions 16and 17 From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A. hame of the class described including a body, said body having a slot longitudinally thereof adjacent the lower free end, a removable bolt arranged in said body parallel with the slot, a tug clip slidably mounted in said slot and engaging the bolt, and a plurality of transversely arranged rivets carried by the body between the slot and bolt for holding the clip in various adjusted positions in said slot.
2. A hame of the class described, including a body, said body having a slot longitudinally thereof, adjacent the lower free end, a plurality of transversely arranged rivets adjacent said slot, a removable bolt arranged within said body adjacent said rivets, and a clip member having a bifurcated portion forming loops engageable with the bolt between said rivets.
3. In a hame of the class described, a tubular body, said body having a slot adjacent the upper free end thereof, a plurality of transversely arranged spaced rivets located adjacent said slot, a section slidable in said body adjacent the upper end thereof, and a bolt connected with said section and extending between two of said rivets for maintaining the section in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
JESSE A. SCOTT.
