ANGUS MGKELLAR, OF FORT DOUGLAS, UTAH TERRITORY.
AXLE-SKEIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,935, dated February 24, 1880.
4 Application filed December B, 1879. 4
\ To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANGUs MGKELLAR, of
` Fort Douglas, in the county of Salt Lake,
Utah Territory, have invented a new and Improved Device for Tightening AXle-Skeins, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l represents the device attached to the skeins of a wagon-axle. Fig. 2 is an cn- `larged longitudinal elevation of the device.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on line x, Fig. 2. p Similar letters of reference indicatecorresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple device for drawing up the metallic skeins on an axle and holding them tightly in place as they become loose from the shrink- `age ofthe wooden axle.
In the drawings, A represents an axle. B indicates an axle-skein extending along the axle A from either end thereof, and held thereto by clips and bolts a b, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1 d d are the bent or flanged ends of the skein B, provided with holes o. Through these bent or flanged ends d4 d is passed a double right and `left screw, D, having, preferably, 'a square center, f, with a hole, g, through each face of it, so that either a wrench or a rod can readily be applied to turn the screw D for the purpose of drawing up and tightenin gtheskeins B.
The holes in the ilan ges d being larger than the screw, and without threads, the screw passes freely through them, and is secured by 'the clamp-nuts E after the heated skeins have been driven into place.
This device can be advantageously applied to most of thc'skeins now in use for the purpose of drawing them up and tightening them as theaXle shrinks, and thereby preventing 4their rattling and working loose, but when applied to skeins that are held in place by bolts, as shown at b,-Fig. l, the bolts must be dispensed with, or the skeins be slotted about the bolts, so that they (the skein can be drawn together if necessary. Y
Having thus described myinvention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent- The combination of the right and left screw D, the axle-skein flanges d, and the clampnuts E, the screw passing loosely through the flanges, as shown and described, whereby the skein can be driven into place without interfering with the screw.
ANGUS MCKELLAR.`
