BRAKE-SHOE.
No. 174,827. Patented March 14, 1876.

H w nfl k N0 N PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D C rrnn STATES EUGENE W. LEAMON, OF GHARITON,
IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN MAY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT: IN BRAKE-SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 174,827, dated March 14, 1876; application filed December 9, 1815.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known-that I, EUGENE W. LEAMON, of Ohariton, in the county of Lucas and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Leather on Wagon and Vehicle Brakes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon,
making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a clamping device for securing the leather or other suitable facing upon a wagon-brake block, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 a section, of my device.
In the figures, A represents the brake-bar, and B the block in general use, and they may be constructed'in any of the well-known and usual ways. F represents the facing of the block, which is movable, and usually made of leather. 0 represents a spider, which has four legs, a a, and as-many feet, 0 e. The
' legs radiate to the four corners of the block B, and the feet upon these legs turn in, so as to catch and hold the leather F to the block. H represents a bolt, which passes through the block B and through the brake-bar, for the purpose of securing the two together.
The head of the spideris considerably larger than the bolt H, and is provided with a female screw.
D represents a thumb screw, which has a hollow barrel, and this barrel is provided with a male screw, to fit into the threads ofthe head of the spiderO. The bolt H passes through the barrel of thumb-screw D, and is provided with two nuts-one next to the brake-bar, marked 1, and the other at its outer end and outside of the thumb-screw, which is marked J. The inner end ofthe thumb-screw pressing against the nut I or the brake-barA causes the spider to close its feet upon the leather, and thus hold it in position. By loosening nut J, and then thum b-serew D, the leather is relieved, and may readily be removed and changed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The spider O, formed with the four diverging legs a, having inwardly-projecting feet 6 upon their ends, and with a hollow hub having female screw-threads, in combination with the brake-bar A, block B, facing F, and hollow thumb-screw D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of November, 1875.
EUGENE WV. LEAMON.
