Description
Nov. 26, 1929. c. KASSOW 1,737,461
HAIR CUTTING DEVICE Filed April 22, 1929 INVEN OR ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 26, 1929 UNITED STATES CRISSIE KASSOW', OF KEY WEST, FLORIDA HAIR-CUTTING DEVICE Application filed April 22,
My present invention has reference to a combined comb and smoothing blade for use by tonsorial artists.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a comb of a cgnstruction where by the barber will not bring his hands in contact with the face of the person being operated upon and which further is primarily designed for employment by the artist in the process of cutting a mans side-burns, and which will permit of the manipulation of either scissors or shears in an easy and expeditious manner with perfect comfort to the person being operated upon and with satis- 5 faction to the artist.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves, the improvement further resides in the novel construction, combination and operative association of parts hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the improvement in operative position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the improvement per se.
Figure 3 is a plan view thereof.
Before proceeding with the description of my improvement I desire it understood that I am aware of the construction of combs designed for the same purpose as mine and have especial knowledge of the patent to V. C. Law, 1,609,558, granted Dec. 7 1926. My invention is, therefore, designed to overcome the deficiencies in devices of a similar nature. For instance, the Law patentcomprises a de vice that has oppositely disposed teeth, from which extends a straight shank that terminates in a handle. \Vith the Law construction it is impossible for the tonsorial artist to operate the comb without bringing his hands in contact with the face or head of the person being operated upon. My improvement, it will be noted from the followlng description is of a construction and design that will permit of the artist manipulating the comb or the combined handle and smoothing blade without bringing his hand into contact with the person being operated upon.
Also my improvement is of a more simple 1929. Serial No. 357,277.
nature than any other with which I am acquainted and may be more cheaply manufactured and more readily manipulated by the barber or artist. The improvement may be constructedof any desired material and is small in size and light in weight. The invention is constructed from a single piece of such suitable material and includes a straight end'l that has on one of its edges projecting teeth 2 that provide the comb portion of the improvement. By reference to Figure 2 of the drawings it Will be noted that the teeth are gradually decreased in size from the inner to the outer portion thereof. The part, 1 at the terminal of the inner and longer teeth, is curved both outwardly and inwardly to provide a shaft 3. This shaft at the edge thereof on which the teeth or comb 2 is formed, is enlarged and is gradually decreased in thickness from its lower to what I will term itsv outer edge. The enlargement is rounded and is designated in the drawings by the numeral 4. This enlarged portion is arranged at an outward angle with respect to the part 1 upon which the teeth 2 are formed. Only the outer edge of the enlarged portion 4 is curved, and this part 4 is gradually decreased in thickness from its lower to its outer edge. The part f provides both a handle and a smoothing blade. By arranging the combined handle and smoothing blade at an angle with respect to the comb it will be apparent that the operator grasping the part 4: will have his hand disposed a considerable distance away from the portion of the face of the person operated upon when the comb is in use and likewise by grasping the part 1 the combined handle and smoothing blade may be brought into operation without liability of the artist contacting with the face of the person operated upon. The improvement is of an extremely simple construction and the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art to which such invention relates and further description will not-be required.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A comb for the purpose set forth, comprising a straight portion provided with teeth on one of its edges that provides a comb portion, said straight portion having its inner end formed with a curved shank that merges into a strai ht portion that affords a handle, said handle having its edge parallel to that of the teeth widened and rounded and gradually decreased in thickness from its straight edge to its said rounded edge. z
2. A comb for the purpose set forth, comprising a straight portion provided with teeth on one of its edges that provides a comb portion, said straight portion havingits inner 7 end formed with a curved shank that merges into a straight portion that affords. a handle, said handle having its edge parallel to that of the teeth widened and rounded and gradually decreased in thickness from its straight edge to its said rounded edge and the teeth of the comb being gradually decreased in length from the inner to the outer teeth thereof.
In testimony whereof I afi ix my signature.
GRISSIE KASSOW.
