Description

Nov. 26, l 929.
A. H. OSTERMANN GARMENT Filed Dec. 12, 1927 Patented Nov. 26, 1929 UNETED SATES ATENT OFFICE ALBERT H. OSTERMANN, OF MILWAUKEE, WISGQNSIN, ASSIGNOR TO FRIED-OSTER- MANN 00., OF MILVIAUKEE, WISCONSIN GARMENT Application filed December 12, 1927. Serial No. 239,481.
This invention relates to garments and is particularly directed to coats such as leather coats, for instance.
Heretofore, in constructing leather coats, it
has been the usual practice to provide the coat with a transverse rear yoke piece and a seam directly across the back between the arm holes, that is to say, directly across the shoulder blades.
These coats also have been made with the backs extending downwardly from this transverse seam and formed of a pair of pieces which necessarily must be of extreme length and continuous.
Coats constructed as outlined above have been found uncomfortable, as the seam extending between the arm holes across the back prevents any yield whatsoever, and as the coat will stretch at other portions, particularly around the waist, and soon becomes baggy and unsightly. In addition to this,
the coat bears across the back of the shoulders and the seam becomes uncomfortable.
This invention is designed to overcome the defects noted above, and objects of such invention are to provide a novel form of coat in which the back seam extending across the back of the shoulders between the arm holes is avoided, and in which a seam is formed at the waist at the back of the coat, and to provi de a belt adapted to cover this scam and to reenforce the coat at the waist line.
Further objects are to provide a coat such, for instance, as a leather coat, in which an economy of material is effected, due to the fact that extremely long pieces of relatively wide leather are not required for making the back, but in which relatively shorter pieces may be employed.
Further objects of this invention are to provide a coat having the characteristics enumerated above, in which no sacrifice whatsoever has been made in appearance, but in which instead the appearance of the coat is vastly enhanced and an attractive and pleasing article results.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
The single figure is a rear view of the coat with a part of the belt broken away.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that a coat of the usual general outline has been indicated. This. coat is preferably formed of leather and may be provided with sleeves l, a collar 2, and side panels 3. The coat is provided with a pair of back panels i which extend down to approximately the waist line and which are oined by a central rear seam 5. Below the waist line, a pair of lower back panels 6 are provided and are joined by the seam 7, which forms a continuation of the seam 5. The upper and lower portions of the back are joined by a transverse seam 8, as shown, and a belt the secured by upper and lower lines of stitching or seams 10, which are positioned on opposite sides of the seam 8 and thus materially reenforce the coat at the waist line and prevent separation of the upper and lower panels.
In addition to this, the belt 9 covers the seam 8 and makes the coat appear as if the back were formed of two continuous panels extending from the neck to the tail of the coat and apparently unbroken. The belt 9 ob viously may be secured to buttons 11 carried by the side panels 3 or may extend completely around the coat, if desired.
It will be seen that the coat is freely flexible across the back between the arm holes and yet is prevented from stretching at the waist line and consequently the fit of the coat, the comfort to the wearer, and an improvement in the general. appearance are secured by this invention.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim:
A leather coat comprising a body portion, a pair of upper rear panels extending from the neck to a point adjacent the rear waist line, a vertical seam joining said upper panels, t
said upper panels extending from one arm hole across to the other arm hole and being flexible across the back between the arm holes, a pair of lower panels joined by a vertical seam forming a continuation of said first men- 1 j tioned vertical seam and joined to said first mentioned panels by a transverse seam extending across the back at the Waist line, a belt bridging said last mentioned seam and stitched above and below said last mentioned seam to the upper panels and to the lower panels respectively, said belt having free" ends projecting beyond the said rear panels, and securing means carried by the side portions gt the coat and engaging the free ends of the elt.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
ALBERT H. OSTERMANN.
