December The invention relates to a device for opening a jar provided with a glass cover, and the principal objects of the device are to provide a simple and inexpensive means for loosening the cover by means of which the leverage of the fastening wires can be applied and employed to open the jar; to provide said device in such form that it can be applied permanently and pivotally connected to the center of the binder which passes over the cover of the jar when it is sealed.

The device is to be applied to a glass jar 1 having a glass cover 5 with the usual gasket 4 between the jar 1 and the cover 5. A wire 3 surrounds the neck of the jar and is provided with a pair of sheet metal plates 7 on opposite sides. A lever 2 is. shown,
provided with two short arms 12 which are pivotally connected to the metal plates '7,
and having two eyes 13 to which the ends iii) of the wire binder 6 are pivoted, and the binder provides the means for clamping the glass top 5 down on the gasket 4. The lever 2 constitutes the means, in cooperation with the binder 6, for clamping the cover 5 down in position against the gasket 4, and also for releasing the cover 5 by a reverse motion. In actual practice the binder is easily re leased, but due to the vacuum formed inside of the jar the cover has a tendency to stick and can not be removed until air is admitted inside the jar. The object of my device is to provide means whereby air may be admitted to the inside of the jar, and I accomplish this means by a specially formed binder with a wedge attachment of peculiar shape to be operated by the lever 2.
The binder 6 is formed in the center into a loop 8, and the loop is swedged'on the binder and angularly inclined thereto, the purpose of the swedging is to bring the bottom of the loop as near as possible in line 27, 1927. Serial N0. 242,720.
with the binder 6. A wedge 9, with a beveled edge 11, is pivotally and permanently attached to the loop 8 of the binder 6 by means of a rivet 10. The wedge is also angularly inclined at the center as indicated by the numeral 14, and by angularly inclining the loop 8 and the wedge 9 I am able to insert the wedge 9 in and over the washer 4 in almost the same plane as the gasket. v
When it is desired to open the jar the binder 6 is loosened and brought down to one side in the usual manner and the wedge 9 is also brought down at the same time. Then the loop and the wedge are brought up to a position so that the wedge may be inserted in and over the gasket 4:. When the wedge is in this position and inserted in and over the gasket 4 the lever 2 is pulled down and the force causes the wedge to enter in and between the gasket and the cover and admit air to the interior of the jar, and if the cover has not been sufliciently lifted to admit air, the lever 2 may be worked up and down in a rocking motion and sufficient air admitted to permit the cover to be removed.
When the jar is sealed and put away the wedge attachment 9 is turned down as indicated in Figure 1 and there are no sharp points or projecting parts to causedamage or in jury, and it will be seen that the device is v extremely simple, and provides a sufficient means to loosen the cover of a glass jar.
Although I have shown what I have found to be a very convenient and practical con struction for embodying my invention, I reserve to myself the right to make such changes and alterations therein as will come within the limit and scope of my invention;
What I claim is 1. The combination with a jar having a cover, and a centrally looped binder. permanently mounted thereon for holding the cover down on a jar, of a beveled wedge pivotally'and permanently connected to the binder loop for projecting under the edge and loosening the cover.
2. In a device of the class described an larly inclined therefrom, and a beveled and upwardly angularly shaped wedge pivotally and permanently connected to the binder loop, and adapted to fit under a jar cover in a, general horizontal position.
3. The combination with a ar having connected with it aicover raising device comprising a :loop -.c'entndlly and .a-ngulanly disposed thereon, V and an angularly inclined Wedge connected to the said loop and adapted to move inwardly towards the eenter'ofthe jar in a general horizontal direction.
