  • This invention relates to a ar cap remover. It is a matter of fact that there is at present in everyday use a jar which has a cap usually of glass, whichis held clamped down to the body of the jar by spring means which are opened to permit the removal of the cap. It is a further fact that very often this cap sticks to such an extent that it becomes an exceedingly difiicult matter to take it off, this being due to the presence of a vacuum within the jar by which the cap is caused to tightly adhere to the body of the jar.

To ctZZ'w hom may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN Gr. LoRnNrz, citizen of the United States, residing at Cromwelh'in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Cap Removers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a ar cap remover. It is a matter of fact that there is at present in everyday use a jar which has a cap usually of glass, whichis held clamped down to the body of the jar by spring means which are opened to permit the removal of the cap. It is a further fact that very often this cap sticks to such an extent that it becomes an exceedingly difiicult matter to take it off, this being due to the presence of a vacuum within the jar by which the cap is caused to tightly adhere to the body of the jar. It is the primary object among several, to provide a device of the character set forth which can be quickly associated with a jar and its cap, which is light yet strong, occupies but a small space, and which when properly manipulated can bring about or initiate the instantaneous removal of the ca The invention possesses other features of novelty and advantage which with the foregoing will be set forth at length in the following description wherein I will outline in detail that one ofv the several embodiments of the invent-ion which I have selected for illustration in the drawing accompanying and forming part of the present specification. Clearly, I am not restricted to the exact disclosure made by said drawing and description.
Referring to said drawing:

The device involves in its make-up a body portion which is adapted to and is furnished with means by which it can be detachably associated with a jar in a ready manner, this body portion being provided with means by which the vacuum to which I have already alluded can be instantly broken and if necessary the vacuum breaking member of whatever character it may be can be utilized to initiate the lifting of the-cap from the body of the jar.
As shown, the body portion is denoted in a general way by 2, being practically in the form of a yoke or bail and comprising the elongated shank 3 and the pendant arms 4: and 5 which as shown are at the ends of the shank 3 although in all cases this may not be necessary, nor am I restricted to the shape of the body portion or bail 2 represented.
I have shown a jar 6 which is adapted to contain fruits, vegetables or other articles and the body of which has a cap 7 which it. is the purpose of the implement constituting the subject matter of the present case to remove or at least to break the vacuum between the same and the body of the jar to facilitate such removal. As shown, the arm or projection 5 has in adjacence to its lower end a lug or ear 8 of somewhat arcuate form and an edge practically of knife form.
As represented, the vacuum breaking member is a screw 9 threaded through the arm or projection 4: near the lower end thereof. The operative or inner end of the screw is shown pointed as at 10, the head of the screw at the outer end being designated by 11. The screw 9 is virtually opposite the lug or car 8.
In action, the article will be caused to straddle a capped jar with the arms 4 and 5 diametrically opposite each other and with the shank 3 extending diametrically of the cap 7. The lug or ear 8 will be inserted desirably under the cap 7 and the screw 9 will be advanced so that the cone pointed end 10 thereof will be forced under the opening between the cap 7 and the body of the bottle. This action results in instantly breaking the vacuum so that the cap 7 can be if desired lifted ofl by hand.
The shank or main part 3may have if de sired through it a slot 12 to receive the knob or protrusion upon the central part of the jar cap 7 when present.
I find that the shank 3 when constructed as shown is one possessing the maximum strength. The sides of the shank diverge from one end to the other and are of ogee or compound curved form.
