G. DAWE I REVOLVING KNIiFE Filed Feb. 28. 1925 gnoentoz Patented July 21, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GODFREY DAWE, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
REVOLVING KNIFE.
Application filed February 28, 1925. Serial No. 12,294.
Revolving Knife, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device especially designed for use in breaking the seal between a jar cap and its rubber the primary object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which will automatically draw the knife to its 0perative position under the cap.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily positioned, and one which by a circular movement of the operators hand will act to break the seal.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device which will be exceptionally cheap to manufacture and one which will be efficient and durable in operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of whatis claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating the application of the device.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view through the cap.
Figure 3 is a sectional yiew taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device includes a body. portion 5 formed preferably of sheet metal, the same being provided with lateral extensions disposed adjacent to one end thereof, which extensions are adapted to be bent upwardly and inwardly as indicated at 6 to grip the inner extremities of the spring arms 7 to be hereinafter more fully described.
Secured to the body portion 5 by means of rivets 8 is an upwardly ,and forwardly extended arm 9, which arm supports the disk 10 that is formed with a beveled edge 11 providing a knife-like surface ,to be forced between the jaw cap and gasket or jar rubber. Minnesota, have invented a new and useful The arms 7, forming an important feature of the invention, while they are constructed of resilient material, are exceptionally strong and as shown, these arms are curved to permit them to be positioned around the neck of a fruit jar, the outer extremities of the arms being curved as at 12 to engage points of the fruit jar neck beyond a central line drawn through the cap at right angles to the handle of the device, to the end that the arms will act to draw the blade 10 into position under the cap wh1ch in the present showing is indicated by the reference character 13.
As shown by Figure 3, the arms are positioned under the extension 6 where they are held in such positions by bending the extension 6 into close engagement'therewith.
In order that the device may be convenlently operated, a handle 14 is provided on the body portion 5 and aflords me-ans whereby an operator may grip the handle and rotate the device-causing the blade to,
engage between the cap and rubber to. relieve the vacuum within the jar and permit the cap to be easily removed.
lVhile I- have shdwnand described the knife '10 as positioned between the rubber and its cap, it'is to be understood that the knife may be inserted between the shoulder of the jar and rubber to relieve the vacuum.
I claim: 1
A jar-cap opener including a body portion, a pair of curved arms having outwardly curved end portions, said body, portion having late'ralextensions adapted to be bent upwardly and into engagement with the arms to secure the arms to the body por tion, a rotary blade, an arm for supporting the blade at a point adjacent to the inner ends of the arms, and said arms adapted to be positioned to draw the blade into engagement with a cap.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GODFREY DAWE.
