Description

June 26, 1928.

w. H. AsHER GRAPE vCUTTING DEVICE Filed Nov. 22, 1926 lmmsfwff wuemloz Patented June 26, 1928.

UNITED STATES WADE H. ASHER, 0F REEDLEY, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO JOI-IN M. CARTWRIGHT, IDOING BUSINESS AS J. CARTWRIG'HT YL` SON.

GRAPE-CUTTING DEVICE.

Application led November 22, 1926. Serial No. 149,936.

This invention has reference to a device especially designed for use in harvestingl grapes or other stemmed fruit, the primary object of the invention being to provide a cutting member which may be positioned over the index-finger ot' the hand so that the stem of the fruit may be cut simultaneously with the movement of the finger to grip the stem.

An important object of the invention is to provide a device `of this character which will be strong and durable and one which may be constructed of sheet metal, the design of the device being such that movement of the finger during the cut-ting operation will not be restricted.y v v IVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as `the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the `details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invent-ion herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing` from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing:

Figure l is a perspective view of a devicev constructed in accordance with the invention, the same being shown on the nger of the user. i

Figure 2 is a rear elevational viewY thereof.

Figure 3 is a plan view thereof.

Figure a is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.

Figure 5 Vis a sectional view taken on line 5,-5 of Figure 2.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the device includes a finger piece indicated generally by the reference character 5, the same being constructed of sheet metal material and curved to conform to the curvature of the index-finger so that the same may be readily positioned for use.

rl`he upper surface of the finger piece is provided with a cut-out portion (i to provide a clearance for the knuckle of the indexedge of the finger piece, defining lateral por-v tions 8 and 9, which, owing to the cut away portion 7, may move laterally with respect to each other when pressure is brought to bear thereon as the index-finger is being` v bent. Y

In order that a smooth surface will be provided at Vthe point of contact between the inner surface of the index finger and the finger piece, a lip 10 is provided and secured to the lateral portion 9, the lip being of such a length that it will overlie thecut away portion 7` and rest on the lateral portion 8, as clearly shown by Figure 3.

Ventilating openings such as indicated at l1 are provided for 'admitting air to the index-finger for the comfort of the user.

The blade forming an important feature of the invention is indicated by the reference character 12 and as shown, is curved to conform to the natural curvature of the is in the act of Yindex-finger and by merely using the indexfinger in a manner to pick the fruit as by breaking the stem, the teeth of the blade will cut the stem and theifruit will be released without danger of bruising or dropping the fruit. f

It is believed that in view of the foregoing detail description, a further description as to the use of the device is unnecessary.

I claim:

In a'device of the character described, a curved tubular body portion formed of resilient material and having a cut away portion extending froml one end thereof, a lip formed at 'one end of the cutaway portion and overlying the out away portion, a portion of the body being free and overlying the body portion defining a finger piece to move with the bending of the finger inserted therein, and a cutting vmember secured to the body portion.

` In testimony that I claim the foregoing as `my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.

WADE H. Asnnn.
