Description
June 27, 1933. w PERKINS ET AL 1,916,115
BOTTLE ATTACHMENT Filed Jan. 21, 1932 Patented June 27, 1933 UNITED s ATEs PATENT OFFICE 3 ALFRED "*W. ZPERKINS AND JOHN D. FRAZNQOIS, OF NEWBURYPORT', "MASSACHUSETTS;
SAID FRAINQOIS ASSIGINOR TO SAID PERKINS BOTTLE ATTACHMENT Application filed January 21, 1932. Serial No. 588,034. I
The invention relates to a bottle attachme'nt and more especially 'to'a combination shield and capremover for bottles. I
The primary object of the invention is the,
5 provision of a device of this character wherein the same is of a construction as to permit accommodation of the neck and cap sealed end thereof of a bottle so as" to serve as a shield for carriage thereby and when it is desired to open the bottle the cap thereof can "be extracted or removed by the use of such shield and in the application of the latter to the bottle it will not detract from the appearance and in fact will add thereto as giving the neck of the bottle a wrapped decorated finish.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the construction thereof 'is novel in form so that it may be telescoped upon the cap sealed end of a bottle to be carried by the latter and embrace the neck and seal the cap therein and upon removal said device can function as a cap extractor or remover.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the same when applied to the neck of a bottle will embrace the same and seal the sealing cap thereof so that the bottle when hearing the device will have a neat and attractive appearance and at the same time the said neck and cap of the bottle will be protected thereby and in the use of said device it may 7 function as a cap remover, the device being serviceable for use in removal of the cap from the bottle hearing such device and after such use the device may be thrown away or destroyed.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, readily and easily applied to and removed from a bottle, neat and attractive in appearance, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in claim hereunto appended.
cordancewith the invention carried thereby.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the device in vertical section.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 with the device removed and in position for removal of the sealing cap of the bottle. I
Figure 4 is a perspective view of thedevice removed from the bottle. Y Similar reference characters indicatecorresponding parts throughout the several views in thedrawing. Referring to the drawing in detail, A desgnates generally a portion of a bottle carrymg at its mouth a crown can B which is sealed thereon in the usual well known manner and upon the neck of said bottle A is adapted to be carried the device constituting the present invention and hereinafter fully described. I I l The device comprises a cylindrical body 5 preferably made from metal of the required thickness and the length of said body may be varied according to the length of the neck of the bottle A. This body 5 has a slightly outwardly curled end 6 and an oppositely inwardly curled head end 7, while formed in the body 5 slightly removed from the end 7 is a substantially oval-shaped opening 8, the latter being disposed with the length thereof transversely with relation to the body 5 and this opening serves to accommodate the cap B of the bottle A so that the edge portion 9 of the opening will function as a jaw while the opposite edge will function as a fulcrum against the top of the cap B for permitting the convenient removal of such cap from the bottle, the jaw 9 in this use being adapted to engage the crimped edge of the cap B as is clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing.
Struck outwardly from the body 5 between the opening 8 and the end 7 and adjacent to the opening is an annular external head or reinforcing rib 10 which materially strength- 10% ens the body 5 to assure the functioning of the device as a cap remover. The rib or bead medially with respect to the opening 8 is formed With an outstruck nib 11 which indicates the center of the fulcrum in the use of the device as a cap remover. 1
The body 5 is normally telescoped over the neck of the bottle A and the rib 10 at its concaved inner portion thereof receives the crimped edge of the cap B so that the said body 5 will be removably latched upon the neck of the bottle A and in this position as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing,
will. conceal the said cap B and a portion of the neck of the bottle A will be shielded thereby. y
Now when it is desired to removethercap B from the bottle A the body 5 is slipped oli' of the neck of the bottle A and brought into position to have the cap, fit into the opening 8 so that the edge 9 of said opening will engage with the crimped edge of the capB and the opposite edge of the opening'fulcrumed onto the top thereof with the body in the position as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. Upon pulling upwardly upon the lower portion of the body 5 when in this position as shown in Figure 3 of thedrawing the cap B can be readily extracted from the mouth of the bottle A and thereafter the body discarded or thrown away. I
The bead end 7 of the body 5 serves to reinforce the latter in conjunction with the rib 10 which latter avoids the breaking away of the opening 8 at the fulcrumed edge thereof or any bending or collapsing of the body when subjected to pressure in the use thereof for the removal of the cap B from the mouth of the bottle A.
It is contemplated that in the service of the device the same has but a single use, that is to say, it will function to remove the cap from a bottle carrying such device and thereafter under suchsingle use it will become unfit for further use and thus be discarded.
What is claimed is A bottle attachment of the character described comprising a cylinder of uniform cross-sectional diameter and of a size to telescope over abottleneck, a slightly flared end formed on the cylinder for frictional engagement with said bottle neck, an inward y directed annular bead at the other end of said cylinder, an annular rib externally formed on the cylinder close to the bead said cylinder belng provided with an elongated openingclose to said rib and adapted to accom- -modate a cap when sealed upon the bottle neck for the removal of said cap on manipu- ALFRED W.
