FRIEDRICH C. BOYSEN, 0F DARBY, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOX-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1 1, 1914:-
Application filed January 30, 1913. Serial No. 745,209.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH C. BoYsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Darby, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in box openers, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character whereby the cover of a box may be readily and quickly removed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a permanent attachment for a box in the form of a lever which will co-act with the edge of the cover so that the latter may be forced from the box with a minimum of exertion.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numeral to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Figure 1, is a front elevation of a box embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a similar view of a slightly modified form of lever. Fig. 3, is a similar view of a still further modified form of lever. Fig. 4, is a section at the line 4.& of Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a perspective view of one form of lever. Fig. 6, is a similar view of another form of lever, and Fig. 7, is a similar view of a still further form.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents a box having a head 3 which is preferably flattened as at 4:, where the opening means is attached and 5 denotes the cover provided with a flared or outwardly projecting edge 6.
That form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 1, shows the opening means in the form of a swinging lever 7 or a lever of the second class. This lever is formed from a single piece of metal, cut and bent to form the body 8, provided at each end with a finger hold 9 which projects at right angles to the body. This lever is pivoted to the box by a rivet or its equivalent 10 and passes approximately through the center of said lever so that the finger holds are equi-distant from the pivot point. From the upper edge of the lever at each side of the vertical center is formed an inwardly projecting lug 11, either of which is adapted to engage the flared edge of the cover 5, when the lever is operated. By taking hold of the finger holds 9, and rotating the lever 7, in either direction, one of the lugs 11 will engage the edge of the cover and gradually force said cover from the box.
In Fig. 2, I have shown a slightly modi- I fied form of my invention in which 12 represents a single lever or a lever of the first class which is pivoted to the box at one end thereof by the rivet 10 and the free end of this lever has bent therefrom the finger hold 9 whereby the lever may be readily operated. From one edge of said lever intermediate its ends is formed a single inwardly projecting lug 11 which is adapted to engage the flared edge of the cover 5 when the free end of the lever is raised and the con tinued upward movement of the free end of said lever will gradually force the cover from the box.
In Fig. 3, I have shown a still further modified form of my invention which is similar in all details to the form illustrated in Fig. 2, except that the lever is provided with a pair of lugs, one on each edge and intermediate the ends so that if the free end of the lever is raised, on either side of the pivot point, one of lugs will engage the cover and force the same from the box.
In the forms shown in Figs. 2 and 8, the rivet when headed is forced over sufficiently to produce friction enough to hold the lever in a horizontal position as shown in the drawings.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction here shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 5 jcctin'g -fiat faced lugs coact'i'ng With the edge of the cover and outwardly projecting Witnesses: finger holds formed from the edges of the EDW. W. ANsTioE, lever adjacent its ends. MOLLIE TOBIAS.
What I claim as new and useful, is affixed my signature in the presence of two 10 A box, a cover therefon a lever pivoted to subscribing Witnesses. the box vand provided with inwardly pro- FRIEDRIOH C BOYSEN Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Gommissioner otIatents,
