Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
SILAS HEWIT, OF SENECA FALLS, NEW YORK.
PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,327, dated May 19, 1857.
To all whom z5 may conce/m:
Be it known that I, Sims HEwrr, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of ConstructingPumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, the letter on each igure referring to the same parts.
The nature of my invention relates t-o the forming a direct cours-e-for the flow of the water through the cylinder N from the water chamber M into chamber O and through discharge pipe P.
The action of the pump is in the following manner, A A being the body of the pump, B B the fulcrum and brake, O the piston rod, D the discharge cap of the plunger tube E through which the water is forced into the chamber O and through the discharge pipe P. The tubes E E in combination with the heads Figures 2 and 3 and the valves F and F constitute a hollow plunger and form a direct open channel for the water from the water chamber M to the chamber O; on the downward motion of the plunger the valve F closes downward. At the same time valve F is forced upward and closes the opening F in tube E and at the same time valve F opens upward allowing the water to pass freely up through tube E and fill the upper part of cylinder N. At the same time the water contained in the lower partof cylinder N is forced up through tube E and discharge cap D and openings S int-o chamber O and through the discharge pipe I). Now
on the upward motion of the plunger valves F and F are closed downward at which time passage F is opened and allows the water contained in `the upper part of cylinder N to pass freely up through tube E and cap D into chamber O, and through dis-` charge pipe P. At the same time valve F opens upward allowing the water from chamber` M to flow into and fill the lower part of cylinder N; K, K, the cylinder heads are put in loose and secured to their places by the chambers O and M as they are secured to the cylinder N by the flanges L L, Figs. 2 and 3, which are secured together by the screws 2, 2, as seen at Fig. 1, and with the packing G G form the plunger head R; H, H, are the packing boxes.
I is a packing tube through which pistonv C passes, this tube passing through the top of the chamber O and down into the tube J J as far as to reach the cap D on its upward motion, the tube J J being attached to the packing boX H, H, and upper head K; at Figs. 2 and 3 is shown the position of the valves F and F.
3, 3, 3, are pins in the piston head It to secure the hinge of valve F.
Fig. 6 shows the manner of forming the double faced valve F which is by placing a piece of lead or other material between the pieces of leather, that forms the valve and secured together by screw 7. Figs. 4c and 5 show the valves F and F as shut down.
The great advantage to be derived from my construction of pump is in the formation of what I call the hollow plunger formed by the tubes E, E, Fig. l and heads Figs. 2 and 3 and the double faced valve F and valve F by which produce a direct upward current for the column of water bath with the upward and downward motion of the plunger making a much more directapplication of force to the water than in any other mode now in use. Another great advantage in my construction o-f pump is that it is much cheaper to manufacture and worked with less power. Valve F is double forced .and has two seats. On the upward motion of the plunger it shuts downward closing the lower opening. On the downward motion it is forced upward closing opening F.
TWhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The arrangement of tubes E, E, pistonhead R and valves F and F constructed and operated in the manner and for the purposes above set forth.
SILAS HEVIT.
. litnesses:
J'. H. MERRILL, H. D. YoURYs.
