SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-No. 700,936, dated May 27, 1902.

To to whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Victor, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and'Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pumps.
My improvement is specially adapted for mine-sinking purposes; but it may be employed in other relations.
My object is to provide a pump of large capacity, but which shall at the same time take up a relatively small amount of room or space within the mining shaft or other place where it may be desired to use it.
My further object is to provide a pump so constructed that it may be packed from the outside of the cylinder.
The general type of the pump is that known as the bucket-plunger, in which the lower bucket or plunger is hollow and provided with a valve or valves on the upper end. This plunger is of twice the area of the upper plunger.
The invention will now be described in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which is shown a pump equipped with my improvements.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section taken through the pumpcylinder. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the cylinder. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the upper end of the lower plunger. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the valve. Fig. 5 is a top view of the lower cylinder member, showing the gland in place.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numerals 5 and 6, respectively, designate the two parts of the pump-cylinder. These parts are so constructed as to overlap each other and form a curved recess or cavity 7 for the packing material, which is forced into place by a packing-gland 8, adapted to enter the recess a'short distance. The two cylinder parts are connected by bolts 9. The gland is held in place by stud-bolts 10, attached to the upper cylinder member and providedwith nuts located both above and below the gland. Within the cylinderare located the plunger members 12 and 13, which are connected by a piston rod 14 passing through the heads of both and secured by nuts screwed to engagement with the heads. As shown in the drawings, the plunger members 12 and 13 are both hollow, though the member 13 would perform the same function if it were solid. The head 12 of the cylinder 12 is provided with openings located between. radial ribs to allow the water to pass through as the plunger descends. The head 13 of the member 13 is solid, and the two heads are separated by guide-stems 15, upon which the valve 16 slides in the performance of its function. The guide-stems 15 are preferably surrounded by coil-springs interposed between the plunger-head13 and the valve 16 to facilitate the seating of the latter. The suction-valve 17 in the lower part of the cylinder may be of ordinary or any suitable construction.
In the operation of the pump the plunger composed of the two members 12 and 13 is reciprocated in the usual manner. In the drawings the plunger is shown at its lowest limit of movement, the valve 16 being open. As the plunger rises the valve 16 closes and the valves 17 open to allow the water to enter the cylinder from below, the Water being simultaneously discharged from the upper part of the cylinder by way of a side opening 18. As thepl'unger descends the valve 16 opens to allow the water to pass through the head 12 of-the lower plunger member. During this operation the valves 17 are closed.
If the valve 16 is made in two or more sec tions, the divisions between the sections should be arranged to register with the radial ribs of the plunger-head 12 to prevent leakage when the valve is seated.
The gland 8 is provided with two flanges 8, (see Fig. 5,) in which are formed openings 8, through which the studs 10 pass.
The cylinder members are provided with flanges approximately square in plan view, (see Fig. 5,) in the corners of which are formed openings A to receive the bolts 9.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a pump, the combination ofa cylinder composed of two overlapping parts shaped to form a cavity whose inner portion is curved and communicates with the cylinder-chamber, and whose outer extremity is exposed, a packingland adaptedto enter said cavity between the cylinder parts, a plunger-stem, a hollow lower plunger connected with said stem, the said plunger being provided at its upper extremity with a valve-seat having openings separated by ribs, a closed upper plunger also connected with the valve-stem, bolts attached to the upper plunger and forming valve-stems independent of the plungerstem, a valve composed of sections slidable vertically on said stems, the dividing-lines between the valve parts being arranged to coincide with the ribs of the valve-seat, to prevent leakage when the valve is seated, the upper part of the cylinder being provided with an opening to permit access to the mechanism within for the purpose of repairs, and a door detachably connected with the cylinder for closing said opening.
2. In a pump, the combination with a cylinder, of upper and lower plungers adapted to move therein, one plunger being closed and the other open, a stem with which the plungers are connected, the lower plunger having a valve-seat at its upper extremity, said seat having ribs separating openings, bolts atopening.
3. In a water-pump of the differential-plunger type, the combination with a cylinder, a plunger-stem, and upper and lower plungers connected with the stem, the lower plunger having a valve-seat at its upper extremity, of guide-stems detachably connected with one of the plungers, a valve composed of sections slidable on said stems and adapted to engage the valve-seat of the lower plunger, the upper portion of the cylinder having an opening to permit access to the mechanism Within for purposes of repair, and a door normally closing said opening, the arrangement being such that the plungers are free to turn on their stem, to bring each valve-section and its guide-stem to a position opposite said door or opening in the upper part of the cylinder.
