GATE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,367, dated March jlggmlannam 8,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J Asrnn JOHNSON, of Geneseo, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in the several figures of which similar characters of reference denote the same part.

rIhe nature of my invention consists in a certain combination of devices hereinafter to be set forth for opening and closing gates and securing themv in such position, the details of construction and operation being as follows:
In the drawing G is the gate hung between posts P P', and having across its face the guides c a. Between which guides passes a rod R, running through post P and having on its protruding end a pulley p (Fig. 3). The turning of this pulley raises and lowers the rod R between the guides a a, and by the pressure of said rod against the guides in this movement causes the gate to turn upon its hinges and open or close as the case may be. To the pulley p is permanently fastened, a cord c, branching at each eX- tremity as seen at CZ d, and running through a cap C on the head of the post P. These cords are carried through caps D and E on posts P P on opposite sides of the gate when closed, and have weights IV pendent from their extremities. By drawing upon the elevated weight on either side the pulley y) is moved and the gate operated. rIhe post P has a catch c into which rod It falls when the gate is closed. It may be stated that this rod is bent, the branch passing through the post forming an angle with the operating portion. When open or closed the rod effectually fastens the gate.
I claim- The combination of rod R, guides L a, pulley y), and weighted cords c, with the gate and posts; arranged and operating substantially as described.
