Description

VNA PETERS. HIOTD LITHCGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. S. PUTNAM, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,442,1datec1 J une 1, 1858i.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SILAs S. PUTNAM, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Double-Acting Pump, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of the pump. F ig. 2, is a vertical section through the same.
The objectof my invention is to make a double acting pump which shall force the water from the eduction pipe or nozzle both at the upward and the downward stroke of a single pump rod. and consists in certain details and arrangements which will be more fully set forth hereafter.
That others skilled in the art may understand and use my invention I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried out the same.
In the drawings A, is the cylinder or body of the pump, which is divided into two chambers B, and C, by a partition or head D. through which the rod E, plays in its up and down movements. This head is fur nished with valves g opening downward. The chamber B, is closed at top by the head l?, which is sufficiently loose to permit the ingress and egress of air as the piston M, is worked. The chamber C, communicates at the bottom by the passage a with the induction pipe, by a passage l), at its upper end with the eduction pipe or nozzle G, by the passages a and c with large pipe or chamber H, which communicates at (l, with the chamber B. An air chamber I is attached on one side of the pump opposite the chamber H, and communicates with the chamber C, through the passages e and a.. Another air chamber K, is placed immediately above the chamber I. The passage o, opens into the chamber K and the nozzle G, outlets from it. The office of this latter chamber is to equalize the flow of the water in a well known and customary manner. A valve L opening inward toward the cham ber C, is placed in the passage a.
A piston M, is secured to the pump rod E, and plays in the chamber B (fitting snugly). Another similar piston N, is secured to the lower end of the rod and plays in the chamber C. This latter piston is furnished with valves f opening upward or into the chamber C.
The operation of this pump is as follows: Then the rod is drawn up and the pistons M, and N, are raised into the positions shown in red, Fig. Q, the water is drawn in through the valve L (as indicated by the arrows), the quantity being equal to the ca.- pacity of the twov chambers C and B (for the length of the stroke.) It will flow a little way above the passage e, in the air chamber I, when the air will be compressed above it and prevent its further use, it will lill the chamber C below the piston N, it will tlow through the passage o, and fill the pipe H, and portion of the chamber B, (ace cording to the relative sizes of H, and B.) Then as the rod descends the valve L, will close, the valves g in partition D, and the valve f in the piston N, will open, the contents of chamber C will pass above the piston N. and the water lifted by the upper piston M, in the chamber B will as this head descends be forced through either the valves g or f. Now ias the chamber C, cannot contain both charges a portion will b e forced out through the passage l), and nozzle G. (As the pistons descend the elasticity of the air in the chamber I, relieves the concussion.) On the next ascent of the rod the valves f and g will close and the contents of the chamber C. will be forced out through the nozzle G. It will thus be perceived that when the pump is in operation Ieach ascent of the pump rod will cause the piston head N to discharge the contents of the chamber C, and each descent of the rod will cause the piston head M, to discharge through the valves g or f, a volume of water equal to the contents of the chamber B, (for the length of the stroke), making a double `acting pump with but one rod.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The single cylinder A, with its partition head D, in combination with the pistons M and N operating in the manner substantially as setforth.
