Be it known that vou G. VILLIAMs, a subject of the King of Great Britaim residing at Hamilton, Bermuda, British lVest 1ndies, have invented new and useful improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps, and more especially to those involving solid reciprocating pistons mounted in multiple cylinders and double-acting in their functions; and the object of the same is to produce a pump of this character having in its head a central chamber wherein may be located a supplemental pump when desired, this pump preferably having two cylinders of the lift and force type.
The main cylinders or barrels of my improved pump are double-acting during their reciprocations, and are also preferably of the lift and force type, and while these deliver water through spouts at the sides of the head, the supplemental pump delivers water through a pipe or pipes which may be led to a remote point. Details are set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of this complete pump with all parts assembled,
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the supplemental pump removed and the chamber closed by a top plate, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
rIhe stock 1 of this entire pump is enlarged at its upper1 end into a head 2, preferably having two spouts 3, and the top plate 4 of the head closes the same except for nipples 5 (suitably packed) through which pass upright piston rods 6. The latter are connected by a cross head 7, which in turn is connected to a stem 8, and suitable means (not shown) are provided for reciprocating said stem vertically. Each rod carries a solid piston 9 at its lower end.
Within the head at opposite sides thereof are mounted individual barrels or cylinders 10 in which the pistons 9 reciprocate, the upper and lower ends of each cylinder being connected with the top plate 4 and the bottom plate 4: respectively of the head 2. Near its lower end each cylinder has at one side an inlet valve 11 standing preferably near the stock 1, and at its other side an outlet valve 12 communicating with an upright passage 13 which leads to the spout 3. its upper end each cylinder also has at its inner side an inlet valve 14: and opposite the same an outlet valve 15 as shown, and the stroke of the cross head and stem is suoli that the piston 9 reciprocates within the cylinder between these two pairs of valves. As it ascends the inlet valve 11 at the lower end is open and water is drawn by suction from the stock 1, and the outlet valve 15 at the upper end is open and water is forced by the piston 9 through this valve and out the spout 3. its the piston descends the other valves 1aand 12 are opened, and the reverse operation takes place so that water is driven upward through the passage 13 and out the spout 8. ln either movement of the piston, the valves not mentioned above are of course closed.
Thus is produced a pump having twin cylinders within its head, and simultaneously moving pistons within the cylinders acting on the upstrolre to liftor draw water from the stoel; 1 and to force water out the spouts 3, and acting on its down stroke to take in water from the space 16 between said cylinders and to force it out the valves 12, up the passages 18, and out the spouts 3; and therefore there is a continuous stream of water delivered out of both spouts. l have shown the cylinders as of equal size, but this obviously is not necessary.
In addition to the double-acting individual pumps just described, there is located within the head and at the center of the space or chamber 16, between the two cylinders 10, a pendant shell 20, preferably circular, closed at its upper end excepting for nipples 25 (suitably packed) and open at its lower end at a point to register with the upper end of the stock 1 as shown. Within the shell is located a supplemental pump consisting preferably of twin barrels 21 and 22 standing side by side and separated by a partition 23, and within each barrel reciprocates a solid piston 29 carried at the lower end of a piston rod 26 which passes upward through a nipple 25, the two rods being connected above the nipples and their packing by an arch 27, and the latter in turn being connected in any suitable manner with the stem 8. Inlet valves 28 are formed at the lower ends of the barrels, and in the sides of the latter are outlet valves 30, each communicating with a pipe 31 which may lead to a distant point from the side of the head as seen in Fig. 3. When the arch is connect- ``ed with the cross head 7 as by a bolt at 32, 'the reciprocation of the stem is communicated through the arch to the two rods 26, and the pistons of the supplemental pump are reciprocated vertically within their barrels at the same time that the pistons of the pump above described are reciprocated. Upward movement of each piston 29 lifts water through the inlet valve 28, and downward movement thereof closes this valve and forces the water beneath the piston out the valve 30 and along the pipe 3l, by means of which it may be delivered at a distant point. It is quite clear that this supplemental pump may be used in addition to the other pumps, or omitted at will. lVhen it is omitted, the nuts on bolts 33 which connect the flange 32 with the top plate l are removed, and the entire device lifted out of the shell 20; after which a supplemental top plate 34 is placed over the open upper end of said shell and secured by the nuts on the same bolts, as seen in Fig. 2.
Thus is produced a pump of the type described, having in addition to its regular barrels a removable element containing two supplemental barrels, and the pistons in all of these barrels are operated by the vertical reciprocations of one stem S.
What is claimed as new is l. In a pump of the class described, the combination with a stock enlarged at its upper end into a head which is closed at its bottom on opposite sides of said stock and has outlet spouts at opposite sides of its top, a removable top plate upon said head provided with nipples, piston rods reciprocat ing through said nipplesl and connected at their upper ends by a cross head, and means for moving said cross head vertically; of solid pistons carried by the lower ends of said rods, barrels within said head and consisting of cylinders in which the respective pistons reciprocate, each cylinder being spaced from the side of the head adjacent so as to leave a passage between, outwardly opening valves in each cylinder from the upper and lower ends of the latter into said passage, and inlet valves at the upper and lower ends of each cylinder opening into the latter from the space between the cylinders.
2. In a pump of the class described, the
combination with the main stock enlarged at its upper end into a head, a top plate on the latter having a central opening and nipples at opposite sides thereof, two main pumps comprising individual upright cylinders at opposite sides of said head, inlet and outlet valves for each cylinder, a discharge spout opening from the head adjacent the upper end of each cylinder, pistons within said cylinders, rodsleading thence upward through said nipples, a cross head connecting said rods, and means for reciprocating said cross head vertically; of a shell hanging from the edge of said opening in the top plate, a removable cover for the top of said shell, a supplemental pump whose barrel is inserted in said shell when the cover is removed, inlet and outlet valves in said barrel, a piston vertically reciprocating therein, and connections between said piston and cross head. for the purpose set forth.
3. In a pump of the class described, the combination with the main stock enlarged at its upper end into a head, a main pump cylinder disposed vertically within said head and having inlet and outlet valves, a solid piston reciprocating therein, a pis ton rod leading upward, and a stem with which said rod is connected; of a supplemental pump including` a barrel removably mounted in said head and containing a pair of cylinders, each having inlet and outlet valves, pistons within said cylinders, rods rising therefrom and connected by an arch, and detachable connections between said arch and stem, for the purpose set forth.

In a pump of the class described, the combination with the main stock having a head at its upper end provided with a top plate pierced with an opening at its center, main pumps at the opposite sides of said head, and a cover for closing said opening at will; 0f a supplemental pump comprising a shell having a flange at its upper end overlying the top plate around said opening when said cover is removed, means for holding it in place, inlet and outlet valves for the supplemental pump, a piston therein, and means for reciprocating it in timed relation to the strokes of the piston in the main pump, for the purpose set forth.
