To all whom itmayroncern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. YE'r'rEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fountain Green, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in .the art to which it appertains to make and 7 "use the same.
. arrangement of My invention relates to new and useful improvements in pumps and more particularly to those of the reciprocating type used primarily in discharging water from wells.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a unique cylinders, pistons, and valves, whereby with a single reciprocating actuating rod, a.continuous flow of water may be discharged.
Vith this object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination hereinafter described and claimed, one embodiment of the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a pump constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. '2 is an edge view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical section as seen along the plane indicated by the line of Fig. 2; Fig. 1 is a horizontal section taken on the plane designated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical section through the upper end of the supplemental cylinder and the parts in conjunction there- 'with; and Fig. 6 is a detail horizontal section as seen on the plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
In this drawing, constituting a part of the application, the numeral 1 designates a cup-shaped receiving casing whose lowerend is provided with an inlet 2 having an upwardly opening check valve 3, while the topof said casing is provided with a pair of openings in which a main upright cylin der 4 and a supplenienta 22; 'ight cylinder are threaded, the two cylinders being disposed in parallel relation and having-their upper ends lying in the same horizontal plane. As shown in Fig. 3, these upper ends contact With gaskets 5 and 5 which arehrrried by annular seats 6 and 6', being formed around the lower sides of a pair of openings with which the bottom 7 of a vertically elongated delivery casing 8 is provided, said casing having in its upper end an outlet from which a delivery pipe 9 leads to the top of the well.
For a purpose yet to be explained, the upper end of the supplemental cylinder i is closed by an end wall 10 having a central opening which is provided wardly opening check valve 11. Slidable' vertically through this check valve is a supplemental piston rod 12 which lies parallel with a main piston rod 12 disposed within the main cylinder 1, both of the piston rods being secured in any appropriate manner to a cross head 13 carried by the lower end of an upright reciprocatory actuating rod 11 which rises through the pipe 9 to any appropriate operating means.

During thisoperation any water which may. leak into the upper end of the cylinder 4. will be again discharged therethe latte?" from through thecheck' valve 11, the movewith an up of the dev ce is as fol-- Although any appropriate means could be provided for connecting the receiving casing 1 and the delivery casing 8, the two are preferably provided with flanges 20 through which upright tie-bolts 21 pass, as most clearly disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2. Furthermore, although it is not absolutely necessary, it-is highly expedient to provide the delivery casing with a hand hole close by a cover. plate 22, whereby access may be had into the interior of said casing.
In the foregoing description, I have de- 'scribed certain specified details for reducing theainvention to an operative constructon, and in'the drawings have shown such de-' tails, but it will be evident that I need not be limited thereto Otli61\YlS(3 than as specified in the appended claims.
I claim 1. A pump comprising a main and a supplemental cylinder disposed side by side and communicating at one end, an inlet into the communicating ends of said cylinders equipped with an inwardly opening check valve, an outlet from the other end of the main cylinder, a single-acting suction piston in said main cylinder and having a'check valve opening toward the outlet, a doubleacting pistonin the supplemental cylinder, and means to reciprocate the two pistons simultaneously.
2. A pump comprising a receiving chamber, a delivery chamber spaced therefrom, an. inlet into the former, an outlet from the latteipsaid inlet being provided with an inwardly opening check valve, a main cylinder between the two chambers and communicating with both of the same, a-supplemental cylinder lying parallel to the main cylinder and communicating only with the receiving chamber, a single-acting suction piston in themain cylinder and having a check valve opening toward the delivery chamber, a double-acting piston in the supplemental cylinder, and means to actuate the two pistons simultaneously.

A pump comprising a receiving chamber, a delivery chamber spaced therefrom, an inlet into the former, an outlet from the latter, said inlet being provided with an inwardly opening check valve, a main cylinder between the two chambers and communicating with both of the same, a supplemental cylinder lying parallel to the main cylinder and communicating only with the receiving chamber, a single-acting suction piston in the main cylinder and having a check valve opening toward the delivery chamber, a double-acting piston in the supplemental cylinder, a reciprocatory cross head in the delivery chamber, and a pair of piston rods leading therefrom tothe two pistons -i. A pump comprising a receiving casing having an inlet provided with an inwardly opening check valve, a delivery casing spaced above the receiving casing and having an outlet in its top, a main upright cylinder interposed between the two casings and communicating with both of the same, a supplemental cylinder rising from the receiving casing to the delivery casing and having its upper end equipped with an apertured under wall, a single-acting suction piston in the main cylinder and having an upwardly opening check valve, a double-acting piston in the supplemental cylinder, a pis ton rod rising from the double-acting piston through the opening in the end wall of the supplemental cylinder, an additional piston rod rising from the single-acting piston, an upright reciprocatory actuating rod rising from the delivery casing through the outlet therein, and connections between the piston rods and said actuating rod.
