To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hans P. PETERSEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Sioux City, in the county of iVoodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps, and more particularly however to combined force and lift-pumps, the operation thereof being due to the compression and suction caused by the plunger.
It contemplates a construction that by a novel arrangement of valves prevents any leakage and will cause a continuous flow of liquid, by the use of a single plunger or piston.
lVith the above and other objects in view this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, specifically claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section disclosing the arrangement of the valves and indicating the course of the liquid on both the downward and upward strokes of the plunger; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the plunger disclosing specifically the construction thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse crosssection taken along line 33 of Fig. 1.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings 1 indicates in general the main body of the pump having the reduced neck 2 at its upper extremity and a similar member 3 at its lower, a flange 4 being provided adjacent the opening 2 to form a support for the apparatus. A bypass extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the main body of the cylinder 1 is provided on the exterior thereof and connects with the same by the ports 6 and 7. Adjacent the lower port 6 of this bypass 5 is a partition 8 so constructed that it in no way interferes with said port.
Rigidly supported on the upper face of the partition 8 is a tubular member 9, having the passages 10 and 11 formed therein. A similar cylinder 12 provided with the passages 13 and 14 is formed adjacent the port 7 of the bypass 5 in such a manner that the said port connects with the passage 13 of said tubular member. The adjacent extremities of the tubular members 9 and 12 are provided with a packing 15 which bears against fork 17 spans the upper extremity of the piston and is arranged to engage the operating rod 18 in any suitable manner. Thus it will be seen that upon the reciprocation of the piston the presence of the packing 15 forms two air and water tight compartments or chambers in combination with the partition 16.
An inlet-valve 19 is provided adjacent the lower opening 3 of the cylinder 1 while similar inlet-valves 20 are provided at each extremity of the passage 10 on the interior of the tubular member or cylinder 9. Further inlet-valves 21 are provided at the lower extremity of the bypass 5 and the lower opening of the passage 13 of the upper tubular member 12. Two outlet-valves 22 are provided at the upper terminal of the passage 14 of the cylinder 12 and the lower extremity of the passage 11 of the cylinder 9. These valves may be of any usual construction, but are shown in the present invention as swing-valves.
In operation the inlet-valve 19 is continually opened but should the pump be at rest the same closes permitting no water to return to the well. Upon the downward stroke of the piston or plunger the air is compressed in the chamber C closing the valves 20, and should there be any water in the said chamber it is forced down the passage 11 through the outlet valve 22 of the passage 11 and up between and out of the pump in the space between the inner cylinders and the outer cylinder. At the same time that the pressure is applied in the chamber C a suction is formed in the chamber B thus causing the water to be carried through the lower inlet-valve 21 up the bypass 5 and into the chamber B, thus taking the course indicated by the arrows in full lines. Upon the return stroke of the piston however pressure is applied in the chamber B forcing the water contained therein through the outlet-valve 22 and cans ing a suction in the chamber C thus permitting the valves 20 to be opened and the water to enter said chamber.
It will be noticed from the foregoing that upon bringing the piston or plunger A to rest the valve 19 will close as well as the valve 20 and lower valve 21, thus allowing no water to leak back into the well and as a result forcing water out of the pump upon the least movement of the piston.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. In a pump of the class described, the combination with a main cylinder having an inlet-valve at its lower extremity, of a bypass secured to said cylinder, and arranged to connect with the interior thereof, inner cylinders arranged adjacent each extremity of said bypass, valves arranged in said cylinders and bypass, and a double piston adapted to reciprocate in said main cylinder and cooperate with said inner cylinders.
2. In a pump of the class described, the combination with a main cylinder having an inlet-valve at its lower extremity, of a bypass secured to said cylinder, and arranged to connect with the interior thereof, inner cylinders arranged adjacent each extremity of said bypass, valves arranged in said cylinders and bypass, and a hollow piston adapted to reciprocate in said main cylinder and receive the adjacent extremities of the inner cylinders therein.
3. In a pump of the class described, the combination with a main cylinder, of a bypass secured to said cylinder and adapted to open therein at each terminal, inner cylinders secured adjacent each extren'iity of said bypass, said inner cylinders having a plurality of passages arranged therein, valves arranged in said cylinders and bypass, and a hollow piston having two chambers formed therein, each chamber being adapted to receive the extremity of one of the inner cylinders.
4. In a pump of the class described, the combination with a main cylinder, of a bypass arranged on the exterior of said cylinder and adapted to be connected to the interior thereof, inner cylinders adjacent said bypass openings, of a plurality of passages in said inner cylinders, one of said passages in, each chamber adapted to receive the extremity of one of said inner cylinders.
5. In a pump of the class described, the combination with a main cylinder, of a bypass arranged on the exterior of said cylin der and adapted to be connected to the interior thereof, inner cylinders adjacent said bypass openings having a pair of passages therein, one of said passages in each cylinder connecting with the main cylinder while the other forms a fluid inlet, and a hollow double piston adapted to reciprocate in said main cylinder and receive the adjacent terminals of said inner cylinders therein.
(3. In a pump of the class described, the combination with an outer cylinder, of a bypass secured to said cylinder having connecting ports therewith, inner cylinders secured adjacent said connecting ports having a plurality of passages therein, said passages connecting, of valves arranged in said passages and bypass, and a hollow piston adapted to reciprocate in said main cylinder having a pair of chambers formed therein, each of said chambers adapted to receive an extremity of one of the inner cylinders and operate the valves by compression and suction, as and for the purpose set forth.
T. In a pump of the class described, the combination with a main cylinder, of auxil iary cylinders located in said main cylinder, a piston cooperating with said auxiliary cylinders, and a bypass connected at one extremity thereof with one of said auxiliary cylinders and at the other end with the main cylinder adjacent the inlet thereof.
8. In a pump of the class described, the combination with a main cylinder, of auxiliary cylinders located therein adjacent each extremity thereof, the lower of said auxiliary cylinders being provided with an inner tube, a double piston cooperating with said auxiliary cylinders, and a detachable bypass connected at one extremity thereof with one of said inner cylinders and at the oppo site extremity with the main cylinder adjacent the inlet thereof.
