This spring' tends normally toforce the' split-ring 25 out against the inner walls of the working-'barrel 7, and` acts to close' the openings 29 formed' insaid working-barrel.

At the same time-,-by' the raising of the educ'tionpipe5 the upper pumping-piston being retarded in' its q the sleeve 20 to move up and engage the seat 19a on the lower end of the pumping-piston 18, thereby closing the openings 22. ls the pistons ascend, the vacuum created in the space 23, will act on lthe split-ring fso as tO'cpen'theopenings 29, and fluid passes from the outer casing or vbarrel 2 into said space 23, which increases in capacity as the pumping-piston rises; and said space becomes filled with the fluid, which is held therein due to the closing of the openings 22. In the meantime, the fluid, which has passed from the space 23a through the openings 33 and valve 31 to the eduction-pipe 15, is being lifted by the upward movement of the eduction-pipe to the top of the well;
On the descent of the pumping-pistons, thesleeve 20. will move away from the seat 19a of the upper pumping-piston 18; and as said pumping-piston descends, the fluid contained within the space 23, will be'forced through the openings 22 into the eductionpipe, the valve 25 havingv closed the openings 29 so that as the piston descends, the tluidvcontained within thespace 23 is forced through the .openings and up through the eduction-pipe to the top of the well. At the same. time, the piston 30 atthe lower end, in its descent, through the suction causes the valve 24a to open, admitting fluid by the openings 29a into the space 23a, until said space becomes iilled with fluid, which, upon the upward movement of the piston, passes as before described through the openings 33 and valve 31 into the education-pipe. In this manner,- I provide a double-acting pumpv for oil or.v like deep wells in which the -fluid is raised by both the upward and downward strokes of the pump, and in this way, the capacity of the pump isgreatly increased.
What I claim is: Y 1. In a pump, the combination of a working-barrel, a pluralityof pumping pistons therein, an eduction-pipe, fluid chambers in the working-barrel between the pistons communicating with said pipe, and means for alternately forcing fluid from thechambers into the eduction-pipe by reciprocation oit the pistons.
2. In a pump, the combination of a working-barrel, a plurality Yor pumping pistons therein, an eduction-pipe, fluid chambers in the working-barrel between the pistons communicatingwith said pipe, valve-controlled openings in said chambers adapted to be opened by suction created by the pistons, and means for alternately forcing fluid from the chambers into the eduction-pipe byreciprecation of the pistons.
.3. In a pump, the combination of a ing-barrel, a plurality of pumping-pistons contained therein, an eduction-pipe, openings lforming communication between said eduction-pipe and said working-valve, openings in said working-barrel between the pistons, spring-controlled valves normally closing said openings, means for opening said valves by the suction created by the pumping-pistons whereby fluid enters said workn ying-barrel, means for trapping said fluid in said working-barrel by the movement of said pumping-piston, and means for opening communication between the eduction-pipe and said working barrel, whereby the fluid trapped therein is raised by the downward movement ofone pumping piston and the upward'movementV of the other alternately.
4. In a pump, the combination of a working-barrel, a plurality of pumping lpistons contained ftherein,-an` eduction pipe within said working-barrel, and forming spaces .be-
tween the pistons for trapping the Huid between said working-barrel and said eduction-pipe, openings in said eduction-pipe leading into said spaces, Valve controlled openings in saidworking-barrel leading into said trapping spaces,means for opening said y openings by the.- suction created by said pumping-pistons, whereby the uidxis admitted alternately: to said trapping Aspaces and means for closing communication between said eduction-pipe and y.one of said trapping spaces-by the upwardxmovement of said pumping plungers, and opening communication between the other trapping space and saidl eduction-pipe wherebyv the4 fluid is,
permitted to enter said eduction-pipe and is raisedtherein by the pumping-plunger.
5. In a pump,`the` combination of awork-V ing-barrel, Y a `plurality fofpumping-pistons contained therein, an reduction-pipe on whichv saidV pumping-pistons are mounted, one of said pumping-pistons slidable on said, eduction-pipe, openings in said eduction-pipe communicating .withY A.a trapping space formed between said eduction-pipe and working-barrel, means for closing said openings bysaid slidable'pumping-piston moving [over said openings, valve-controlledopenings in said ,working barrel, means for opening said openings by` the suction created by the` pumping-pistonsk alternately, and
means for opening communication between the trapping spacey between saideductionpipe and said working-barrelwhereby on one movement of .said pumping-pistons the fluid trapped in onei of saidspaces ispermittedto pass into said eduction-pipe, andv means whereby the fluid trapped in the other of said spacesis admitted to said eduction-pipe by the opposite movementof said pumping-piston.
