DOUBLE FORCE-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,402, dated November 25, 1890. Application filed May 20, 1890. Serial No. 352,538.A (No model- To all whom Ait may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMAZIAH B. EBY, a citi zen of the United States,residing in Leacock township, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Double Force-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in double-acting force-pumps; and the novelty consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and specically pointed out in the claims.
The drawing represents a vertical section of my invention.
Referring thereto, A is a cylinder cast in one or more pieces and attached to the lower end of the pump-stock B. The top and bottom of the cylinder are each perforated, and opening` inward from such perforations are valves c and d, respectively. A suspended tube C registers with the perforation in the top and the upright tube D with the perforation in the bottom.
E is an inner cylinder or piston-head having two chambers C and D', divided by a vertical partition E. Through a central opening in the top of the chamber C` the suspended tube C passes, and through a similar opening in the bottom of the chamber D the upright tube D. The openings in the top of the chamber C and the bottom of the chamber D are of suicient size to permit the tubes to work through them easily and yet be practically water-tight. The bottom of the chamber C and the top of the chamber D also have Aopenings through them, which are provided with outwardly-opening valves c d. The piston-rod F is connected with the top of the piston-head E in the usual manner and with any suitable operative mechanism.
The tubes C and D are of such diameter as to iit snugly in the chamber C D without being brought into contact with the walls thereof, and they extend to about the center of the cylinder A. The piston-head E is of somewhat greater depth than the length of tubes C and D, so that in the full upward and downward strokes of said piston-head both tubes may continue in engagement therewith.
In operation the cylinder A is supposed to be entirely submerged. NVith the downward stroke of the pistoirhead the valve o of the chamber C is closed and the valve c of the tube C opened, thus filling the extended tube C and chamber C with water'at the completion of the stroke. A t the same time the valve d of the chamber D' is opened and the valve el of the tube D closed, the closing of the chamber D upon the tube D causing about one-half the water contained therein to be forced into the cylinder A. With the upward stroke the operation of the valves is reversed. In the drawing the piston-head is shown on the downstrolie, as will be seen by the position of the valves.
My pump, as herein described, is cheap and simple in construction and effective in use, producing a continuous and uninterrupted discharge of water.
I ain aware that prior to my invention cylinders have been made with tubes secured opposite each other in the ends thereof and extending toward the center, said tubes having other tubes or chambers sleeved over them,a piston-valve playing between the inner ends of the sleeved tubes or chambers and adapted to engage alternately therewith. I therefore do not claim, broadly, the combination of a cylinder having inwardly projecting tubes and sleeved chambers and a valve operating in conjunction therewith; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a pump, the combination, with a cylinder having perforations in the top and bottom thereof provided with valves, of tubes registering with said perforations, and a piston-head divided into chambers, each of said chambers having au opening `in one end through which one of said tubes passes and an opening in the other end, and a valve connected with each end of the piston head, adapted to close said openings, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a pump, the combination, with a cyl inder having a perforation in the top on one side of the center and a perforation in the bottom on the other side of said center, and inwardly-opening valves covering said perforations, of a suspended tube registering with the perforation in the top of the cylinder and an upright tube registering with the perforation in the bottom of said cylinder, a pistonhead divided into two chambers, one of said IOO chambers having an opening in the top close the openings opposite to those through through which the 'suspended tube passes which the said tubes pass,a11 constructed and zo and the other chamber an opening in the botoperating substantially as and for the puri tom through which the upright tube passes, pose specified.
